Nitre bluing

Small parts you can DIY with a kit from Brownells, it's the large parts that are a PITA. Check their catalogue as well as the video library on their website.....

Nitre bluing is easy. Look it up. Small pot bottle of whatever salt, heat to 700, hang part from wire, dip, shake bubbles off, hold until the color is right. Runs from purple to blue to yellow. I have a pot of resolidified whatever in my garage.

I kinda like the wear. There's a pic of the safety and slide lock I did on my 1911 in the Post Yours thread. I did have some freckles from bubbles.

If you're interested.
It's potassium nitrate I used. Found pure/high concentrate in stump killer.
Done outside, on a hotplate.
Piece needs to be completely clean and highly polished for best results.
Pretty sure the color is completely due to temp, and anything that can hold that kinda temperature could be used.

I honestly thought that nitriding was a more involved process. Now I know...

Nitre bluing =/= nitriding.

Nitre bluing is an old process that creates an very delicate finish for aesthetics only and IIRC can jack up heat treating, it is not used on high stress components. It is done much faster and a couple hundred degrees cooler that Nitriding.

Nitriding is a surface hardening treatment usually combined with a coloring process.
