No tax credit for Vets

i'm no expert on this, but from my understanding veterans currently dis-enroll from va healthcare in order to receive aca subsidies as you can't be in receipt of both va and a subsidized aca healthplan. so if you're non-service connected you get screwed out of using the va. if you're service connected you can still be seen at the va for your service connected conditions.

I am service connected, but you should try getting a) an appointment b) treatment c) any kind of therapy d) resolution for anything. You may be weeks getting an appointment and months getting any kind of treatment or therapy. And you get worse in the mean time. I've went through this for the small stuff I have wrong with me, I can imagine if it was major! TRICARE is a joke! There isn't even a DR that takes it for retired guys like me in my area. Just look at how bad the government manages VA and tell me they need to be he ones handling the country's healthcare.

Agreed. The system is a joke and it forces you to seek care outside of the VA.

im not sure where we're going here. all i'm pointing out is what the law currenlty forces veterans to do. and if you have tricare, you do not have to dis-enroll from va. ie you dont have to choose va or choose tricare, you can have both.

as for tricare sucking, wouldn't know. haven't had it since i was discharged. all i can say about tricare is its an amazing deal compared to what you will pay on the civilian marketplace.

I use Tricare and have since we could buy into it. I have no complaints what so ever regarding the availability of physicians who accepts it, dental or medical. I think I pay a little over 200 a month for my family of four. This is Tricare Reserve Select.

TRICARE was great when I was on AD. TRICARE Reserve Select is pretty good. TRICARE Retired!? It sucks! I saw the same doctor for almost 20 years! The day I retired, I couldn't see him anymore even though he was still TRICARE, he was TRICARE Retired. Makes sense right? There are no doctors, have to be preapproved for hospital stays, it sucks! I'd be better off paying for something else!

Not if you can't use it!

dont know what to tell ya as i'm not all that familiar with tricare. i only had it while i was active. my limited understanding is there are other options such as tricare standard that would allow you more physician, but at the cost of increased deductibles. ymmv, iirc, tldr, etc

I've got Tricare Standard- no premium, minimal co-pay/deductible & cheap prescriptions.

Seems like most doctors around here accept Tricare & with UNC so close (& they are extremely well-versed with Tricare), why go elsewhere for health care? We've had other crises to deal with, but thank God we didn't have to sweat that.

My pension is nothing to write home about, but the GI Bill & healthcare have been a Godsend.

TRICARE Standard, TRICARE Retired is much different.

Having access to Tricare Reserve probably going to keep me in longer than I want to. My civilian job has health insurance but the cost is a bit higher, and coverage is a bit lower. I briefly looked at Tricare Retired and if I remember the monthly payment was ridiculous. Hammer21b can you confirm?

Think this has what you are asking about Tricare Reserve Retired https://tricare.mil/Costs/HealthPlanCosts/TRR (over $400 a month)

I've never hear of Tricare Retired. When I retired, my choices were Tricare Prime which cost $450/yr, with $12 co-pays, no deductible & CHEAP prescriptions, but required referrals/authorizations to see specialists, or Tricare Standard- $0/yr, little higher co-pays, small deductible (with annual/catastrophic cap), prescriptions a couple bucks more, but no referrals required.

We elected Prime, which turned out to be a bit of a PITA due to the referral/authorization issue, but when they discontinued Prime in our area, they defaulted us to Standard. I was pissed at first, but it's turned out to be a much better deal & easier to work with.

I'm currently appealing my VA disability rating & wouldn't use a VA medical facility if I was bleeding out in their parking lot. Crooked sonsabitches rated me 10% for my tinnitis. Never mind my degenerative disk disease from C1 to S1, along with bulging disks at C6/C7 (along with a heavily pinched nerve) & L5/S1, along with a bum left ankle & right knee caused by 20 yrs of ruckmarches & PT, along with conducting 60-65 static line jumps over my 10 yrs on jump status.

ya know, i've never seen a rating for that condition higher than 10%. i believe that is the max rating one can receive for that condition.

10% is max for tinnitus. While they service connected my ankles, knees & back, they gave me jack shit for them. But hey, my ears ringing are a nuisance, while the other issues only affect my mobility & greatly restrict my activities.

Climb a ladder & clean my gutters? Not gonna happen. Push mow my yard? Sure, but it's gonna cost me 2 days of work while my back untwists itself & my ankle will support my weight again. Go for an occasional 2 - 3 mile jog, to help keep my weight in-check & relieve some of the burden on my back? Not until I have surgery on my right knee & then only if my ankle decides to cooperate that day. Good times.

that is when you need to have your c&p exam, when the injury is at its worst. if you're taking pain meds, stop taking them a few days prior to the exam so that they don't allow you to move the joint more than you actually can move it. stop at the fist sign of pain. if you have full range of motion, then there is no problem (or very little as your rating suggests) according to the VA.

not telling you to lie, but definitely let them see the full picture.

Absolutely. I'm putting together the last of the documentation for the appeal. Between not being able to work out for over a year & the weight I've gained, there won't be any need to fake. Hell, it hurts to turn my head to look over my shoulder, before changing lanes.

When I retire from the USAR I will just go back to my civilian coverage untill I turn 58.
