ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man has been sentenced to life in prison for a foiled plot to shoot hundreds of people on behalf of the Islamic State group.

It was Sullivan’s father, a retired Marine, who tipped off investigators in April 2015 to his son’s suspicious behavior after he began pouring gasoline over religious figurines in the family’s home.

Justin Nojan Sullivan of Morganton received the sentence Tuesday in federal court in Asheville. He pleaded guilty late last year to one count of attempting to commit an act of terrorism.

Federal authorities say Sullivan admitted to having frequent contact online with a prominent Islamic State terrorist in Syria who asked him to film his attack. Authorities say Sullivan planned to purchase a semi-automatic rifle to kill hundreds of people at a concert or night club. He was arrested in June 2015.

Kudo's to the parent, at least he was observant of the kids behavior and instead of burying his head in the sand, he did something. He probably saved some lives even though his kid more than likely won't last long in the gray bar hotel...

Glad he put others and his home/country in front of his family.

Wish others would follow suit and start realizing their babies arent all angels. (sorry, I see this on a smaller/lighter scale in the school system, their kids can do no wrong etc, its OUR fault they are failing and getting suspended etc sorry)

Are you referring to the fact that he didn't actually get a chance to follow thru? I see your point there - however he also DID kill a neighbor to finance his plans.

My biggest question is would the neighbor still be alive if the feds were not working with him? IIRC he asked the fed to kill someone to prove he could before he killed the neighbor. Not like I'm going to get too worried about it. But I don't like these "stings". They tend to get weird and always have sketchy "facts". The kid was deadbeat, no job, and lived at home but he's going to buy an AR, suppressor, and ammo to do this? Kid might have been all talk until he got a fed to help him get the tools. I just don't like this stuff.

Kid's also a first class moron and murderer. So don't get me wrong on feeling sorry for him.

I think he was asking, what took so long? I know I was.

I'm not his defense lawyer, in case you didn't know that.

I do know there is precedent for the FBI to create phony situations to entrap those who may have terrorist-type thoughts but not the means or fortitude to go through with them.

Maybe add a little sugar to your next cup of coffee this morning.
Obviously I know that because I said you were smarter than the defense. How do you know of a precedent, just because every time they catch someone in an investigation some internet commando says it's a false flag?

I guess that never in the history of police investigation have they ever uncovered a crime without being the ones to set it up first. You know, cause there aren't any real criminals to be found I guess.

Was this a truly organic terrorist plot by the kid or one groomed by the FBI then presented to the kid under false pretenses?

He was running his mouth on the inter webs and the FBI found him. He picked up an FBI "accomplice" who could "get him a silencer" from what I remember. Likely after having contact with foreign actors He was planning on going to the Hickory gun show to pick up an AR, but they arrested him first.

What did he actually do? Well, he killed his neighbor so there's not sympathy for this sentence. But he did nothing but run his mouth about a terrorist plot. FYI, I live 20 minutes from him and in the city most likely to be targeted, Hickory. Does this idiot worry me as a terrorist? No. He does not. Everything I have read stinks of him being led along then busted after he's fed enough info and made enough comments. I've never heard of anything he was actually capable of. Just his "plans" to get and AR, suppressor, ammo; then carry out an attack. I do know him and the FBI went back and forth about killing someone to prove they were serious. Then his neighbor ended up dead.

Is he unstable? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Guilty of murder? Yes. Guilty of terrorism? I highly doubt he had the ability to pull anything off. Broke dead beat living at home. And keep in mind, he plead it out. This never made it to trial for anyone to make a judgement on. I don't care about this idiot in particular, I just don't like how these "investigations" seem to go. Sketchy at best IMO.

The other side of that coin is what does it take to shoot up a theater or a night club? Those guys weren't receiving weapons and support from ISIS. An act of terrorism is cheap and dirty and could be done by anyone.

Well, it takes possession of weapons capable to do that, which he didn't have as far as I've heard. Is running your mouth and being a moron punishable by life in prison now?

They had a trial and everything so I guess so. I don't hear the ACLU protesting.

He pleaded to it. That's not a trial. Assuming he plead for a deal, not sure what that would be. This is local to me. Not one single mention of him having the means to pull this off. Just that he was planning it with the help of the FBI. I guess .gov foiled another one of their own terror plots again.

You don't think he could get a rifle?

Maybe, but when has the possibility of getting something been the lynch pin of our justice system? That's as bad as ATF's constructive intent. It's the stuff of 1984 and Minority Report.

Here is a good link of the early run down of the case.

The high points.

He was on NOBODIES radar until his dad called 911.
Afterwards the FBI contacted him online. Again, initiated by his parents call not his own actions.
FBI built and delivered a suppressor to his home.
FBI arrested him for possession of a suppressor.
He claimed to be buying a rifle soon, but never got around to it.
IIRC this report was before they connected him to the murder of Clarke.

Like I've said before. Kids an idiot, but the investigation reeks of being sketchy. And he pleaded to the charges. Did he claim to want to carry out a terrorist attack? Yes he did. But I've never been convinced he was capable of it. And throwing people in prison for life for running their mouth is sketchy at best. I would have no problem with him going away for life, or even the death penalty, for the murder. But I prefer to see justice served against someones actions, and the punishment based on actions; not just on talk.

Clearly you've done research that served to support your theory but if the setup was so transparent why wouldn't the defense go to trial and claim entrapment?

I applaud the effort you put into this topic and I am going to give it to you because I'm not willing to put in any more time to this case. He had his day in court.

I think murder is and that's why he is in prison for life. They don't play that part up but that's pretty much the whole case I'm sure.

Nope. The plea was for terrorism related actions. The murder trial will be in Burke county, and unless they plea it, it will be a jury trial. It was considered, but not the reason for the charges.
