Sheriff Darren Campbell states on Wednesday July 18th at 1:41pm a deputy advised Iredell County Communications he had been involved in a motor vehicle collision. Both vehicles involved in this incident were employees of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred on Taylorsville Highway north of Statesville. One of the deputies involved in the collision was on duty and had slowed to make a left into a parking lot. The second deputy was traveling west toward Statesville on Taylorsville Highway and was off duty, riding a motorcycle. The second deputy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The on duty deputy involved in the incident is named Deputy Justin Betts, he will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The deputy who was killed was Corporal Bill Wood. Corporal Wood had been employed with Iredell County Emergency Communications since 1993 and had transferred over to the Sheriff’s Office in 2007.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident at this time.

I ride a lot. Vehicles making left turns in front of bikes is one of the top causes for rider deaths. It's usually the left turning vehicles fault. Sucks for the motorcycle rider.

I hope this is not the case, but chances are it is. I to ride a motorcycle, this and red light runner scare me the most.

Yep. My biggest fear as a rider. "He came out of nowhere". As if that were possible.

Coworker tells the young pups, you are as thin as a car radio antenna when your riding.

Prayers for the family and fellow officers. I ride and last year a near death experience has kept me off for over a year except to charge the battery on a long country road.

As a fellow rider, and human, I feel for his family and friends for their loss.
I also feel for the on-duty cop for having to have his brother's death on his hands.

As stated above - left turning autos cause so many motorcycle crashes, they just dont pay attention to us so many times.

Again, thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased.

This is a real danger of riding a motorcycle. I’ve read that it is a cognitive phenomenon in that automobile drivers are expecting to see automobiles and hence other objects, like motorcycles, sometimes just don’t register and the driver really just doesn’t see them.

Had an old lady turn left at a green light on main St in Lexington in 2015, said she even saw me but turned anyways. I hit the side of her car head on, on my Harley. Threw me 20ft up the road, over her car. Not sure why she turned infront of me if she saw me. Walked away with nothing but a fractured t3 vert. And a sore back. Haven't road since.

I hope you were riding ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time). You never know when you might bounce your head off a car or pavement or slide down the road and get road rash.
People always ask me if I am hot because of all the gear I wear in the summer. I tell them that sweat wipes off much easier than road rash. Glad you survived your incident.

I had a half helmet, jeans and a t shirt on. I've had 2 friends die in much less severe wrecks. I'll never understand how I stood up and walked away from that one. Completely destroyed my bike. Now that I have a child, just can't seem to bring myself to risk it again. I see too many idiots, every day going to work.

Biggest reason I gave up riding years ago. Sometimes they see you and turn anyway knowing you're going to stop (or hope so) and then sometimes they look right through you and only see the car behind you. Either way, it got to be too dangerous for me so I gave it up....

Tough day for all involved. I feel for them both and their families.

My sister did that maneuver when we were teenagers. She turned in front of a crotch rocket with two passengers on it. They hit her passenger door and went over the top, injured but alive. Their shoes left skid marks across the roof and when we got her car back she had a trophy in the back seat... the piece of cowling with “NINJA” on it.

My pop always told me to pretend I’m invisible and drive like it, because if someone fails to notice you, you ARE invisible.

Sad deal for sure. But I don't ride a bike any more because, "Drunk cell PH drivers".
I have to look out for them every day, in my car. I'm one of the last people that want
more laws, BUT I think if you cause a wreck by cell phone, you should face the same
charges as driving drunk.

How about if they are eating thier lunch, reading a book, putting on makeup, daydreaming, whatever? Should they only be charged if they are drunk or using their phone?
If someone screws up driving and kills me on my bike I'm still dead no matter how they screwed up. People should be held responsible for their actions while driving, period.

What if they have the radio on?

Im always in long pants and a jacket (mesh Alpinestars during hot days, leather Astar on most days) and gloves.
I see these fools in almost nothing (look at a post I made a month ago about the fool on the gixxer with basketball shorts, a tank/bball jersey and that was it...not even shoes!), but I'd rather sweat then bleed

I rode for over 50 years. Quit at 65. It was simple for me, risk/reward. I don't heal like I used to.
That's my reasoning as well. I've only got one ass to fall back on. It wouldn't do for me to have to depend on someone else and I've already spent 9 months in a cast because of a motorcycle wreck.

Which is really nothing....There are many people out there with 3+ DUI's. Guy I worked with had his wife and child killed going to church on a Sunday morning at 9am, guy with had 6 DUI's on the records the cops knew his car on site. Funny and sad part was the drunk survived with minor cuts and bruising.

The sad part in the US is that most think of a motorcycle as a toy. Everybody wants their freedom, but they forget the responsibility that goes along with it. I do like how in EU they use a teared motorcycle license system.

I was afraid it might turn out something like this.

Prayers for the family of the officer who died and for the officer whose life will be affected by by what he done.

NC gives licenses to lots of people who should not have them at all in cars. I could list a few but I may hurt someone's feelings or politics. 50% of the minivan drivers should have their license revoked.....
