I'm inherently suspicious about articles that originate with the Wa Post, but this one seems discussion worthy: A black off-duty cop tried to help stop a crime. Another officer shot him: link to MSN: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a-...nother-officer-shot-him/ar-BBDb9qz?li=BBnb7Kz

Following a chase that was result of an LPR hit for a stolen car:
An off-duty officer who lives nearby heard the commotion, grabbed his service pistol and headed to the scene to assist his fellow officers. He arrived as the other officers were carrying out the arrest.

The other officers ordered the off-duty officer to the ground, then recognized him as a fellow policeman and told him to stand up and walk toward them.
As he approached, another officer arrived and shot the off-duty officer in the arm, “apparently not recognizing” him, police told the Associated Press

Both men involved were about the same age (38 and 36) and had been with the department for several (11 and 8) years. The shooter is white, the one shot is black. It's being cited as another case of black man equals threat syndrome.

Not sure about the exact situation. But thinking they should know each other is kind of like saying you know everyone you went to high school with 10 years ago. I bet St.Loius has a large PD.

We had a similar situation when I was with GSP. 2 officers working a multi vehicle crash (after dark) w/injuries. One of the uninjured occupants of one car became belligerent and pulled a gun on the Trooper and the Trooper responded as he was trained. About that time an off duty county Sheriff's Officer rolled up on the scene and jumped out with his gun drawn and was shot COM by the second Trooper. Neither Trooper recognized the county Deputy and thought he was friends with the first suspect laying on the ground, deceased.
Investigation ensued and both Troopers were cleared. The county Officer was touch and go for several weeks but did eventually pull through. Moral of the stories(s) keep your nose on your face and outta other people's business unless they request assistance. Don't pull a gun and approach an Officer/Trooper. Identify yourself immediately and don't do anything not asked for.....

The off duty guy was in his house when he heard the crash. You would think he would have thrown on a "Police" jacket or something to identify himself before he jumped in? I'm sure they are trained on what to do in these scenarios, at least I know they are where my son works.

Putting on a police jacket might have helped, but it is still no more proof than yelling the word police.
