I have a small oil leak on my Escape. It could be oil pan gasket or front crank seal...After talking to @mikeoverlay. I degreased everything so I could see better where it was coming from last week. Check the truck Friday after driving it for a week and I have a small drip stream that appears to come from behind the harmonic balancer..Which would indicate front crank seal. I want to get that dye that you use a blacklight with to make sure...OR to eliminate the possibility of having two issues. What is it called?? I searched dye in Advance auto website with negative results.

Have an O-Reilly's nearby?

I checked AutoZone (6-pack), Advance (not found) and O'Reilly's (single bottle) for TP-3405.

If it has a lot of miles on it could be a hard seal.....just make sure you check the crank balancer for a grove worn in it. It won't seal and you'll have another leak.

In the likely event it is grooved get a speedi sleeve for it.

What is a hard seal??

I haven't had a chance to go by O'Reilly's or Napa to get the dye yet. How long does it have to run thru your engine?? 1 day? Week?

Hard seal, a seal that has hardened due to heat cycles. No longer plyable to maintain a constant contact with the crank pulley.

A 20 minute drive should be enough

Thanks!

Hey..That harmonic balancer doesn't have anything to do with timing does it? I was reading about some cars it did.

Well...Got the dye and put it in. A 15 min drive...Then it sat awhile then another 15 minute drive. I checked it while the vehicle was cold. I'm not seeing anything glowing with the UV light. Do I need to check it while it's hot or even running?? I put it on ramps so I can get a better look... Majority of the oil pan looks dry...Just appears to be coming from the front of the oil pan where the front crank seal is. Probably tackle this tomorrow morning.

It wont be a bright glaring glow. It will be a orangish to a yellow/greenish hue. Look at the oil cap with the light to get an idea.

May have to drive it some more. A small leak may take awhile to leave a noticeable trail.

^^^^^^^^^^
What he said. Just drive it some more.
Also the V6 has a regular keyed balancer so no timing issues with that one.
If you had the 2.3 I would have told you to hold up before loosening the crank bolt. Has to have the cams and crank locked with alignment tools before removing as well as having to align crank pulley and lock it down before torquing balancer bolt. All the cams and crank sprockets in that engine are "friction fit".

Do not forget you will need a set of the glasses to make the uv dye show up as well as the light. You can buy a kit on ebay for cheap.
