Most people use a hand priming tool, most of the priming features of the single/turret presses don't always work so well. It's also easier to set off a primer if you are careless.... due to the extra leverage of the press. You get a better feel for when something isn't right with the hand primer.

I've tried them on my old Rock Chuckers and my new T7....... they didn't work out for me. And when the occasionally did work..... they were slower than using a hand primer.

Old R. Chuckers are awsome.
Mine is from the late 70's and still going strong.
My advice, buy an RCBS hand primer and forget the on press priming.

The only thing your missing is the spent primer catcher. It is not essential.
I used a Kitty litter box to catch primers for a good while.

One nice addition is the Hornady LNL bushing system. Handy, but not a must have.

image.jpeg I run both . The primer feeder works 'ok' . Some times a bit finicky. Some times can't tell the tube is empty and dump primers on the floor. Other times run a tube to empty without a hitch.
The catch works better than not too.

Good old press you got, worth having.

Good info thanks! I already have the RCBS hand primer and I like it so I won't waste my $$. I definitely want the catch tray because my bench is in the house and I can't have them all over the floor. My Lee press catches 99.9% in the drop tube - how does this catch tray gizmo measure up?

Lots of them get hung up between the press and catch body. Just have to swipe with a finger into the bowl before removing. I'd say it's the same rate for not hitting the floor.

Check the top of the press. There should be two numbers stamped near where the dies screw into the press. This is the year the press was made.

I too have an old rock chucker. Call RCBS, tell them everything you need and you might be surprised at how well they take care of you. ;)

I learned to load on one of those that was several years older than me. Solid press for sure. No idea how many thousands of rounds it loaded of rifle and pistol, quite a few though, dad shot Hunter's pistol for years, dabbled in bullseye, and used to try new rifle loads it seemed weekly. That press is very smooth and really has no play after all these years.

The primer catcher is decent, but not 100%, basically fool proof though. I never personally tried the priming system. I vastly prefer the RCBS bench mounted priming tool to a hand primer.

Catfish,

Here is one that started out looking almost exactly like yours. Used it for precision rifle loads until recently. Love the Rock Chucker, but matching RCBS green paint with off-the-shelf spray paint is nearly impossible.

RCBS CS is second to none. I've bought their dies used with pieces missing, and they sent me replacement parts free of charge.
