One thing I hate when people ask me "oh, you were in the Navy?"

My wife just reminded me. About 3 years ago we were at Disney World for Christmas staying at Shades of Green. Was in the lobby and talking with this retired army guy and we were talking about where we were stationed. Turns out he was stationed at Ft. Richardson (Anchorage, Ak) and I was at a USCG Marine Safety office back in the 1970's. He asked me if I knew a certain officer. Turns out he was talking about my then Commanding Officer and they were neighbors. We were both quite sure that we probably met each other because the C.O. always threw cook outs on the weekends and his neighbors were always there also.

So, yea it is a small world sometimes.

I wasn’t in the service, but I have another one y’all may get...because I’ve done it:

“Oh, you are in the Army? My dad was in the Army back in the 60’s!”

....well great...so we’re millions of other 18-25 year old able bodied men during that time period...you want a cookie?

The nuclear Navy is also a pretty small community - especially when you work in the civil nuclear power world afterwards. I work with several guys I served with, all by happenstance.

But yeah, the “do you know Chief Commonassedname? He was my dad. He was on submarines in the 60s.”

Bitch, I was born in 1980, didn’t get to my first boat until 2000. No, I didn’t know your Pops.”

Working at McGuire is a similar experience- I run into former employees from there all the time that ask if I know so and so, who was an engineer from 1985-1993. I usually just say before my time but the name sounds familiar.
