Need a compromise.

HandiRifle is my only 300BLK, and it was an impulse buy. If I end up liking it I'll probably replace it with either or both a .308 bolt gun or AR in 300BLK. So while I don't mind buying good glass, I want something that I can repurpose if necessary. Of course I don't know what I'd repurpose it for, so maybe that's no help.

I've got a 3-15x42 Conquest HD5 that I could put on it, but it's kinda huge.

Red dot isn't out of the question, but I have an astigmatism that makes them look like a comet, so not optimal. Could shuffle the aim point pro over from the AR-9.

Assume range from 0-200yards.

Maybe a good rimfire scope? I can always use another of those.

Perhaps I need to give up on the idea of repurposing and just plan to sell it if I go a different direction.

So, with that almost random set of thoughts, any suggestions?

The Nikon P300 BLK works great on my AR out to 200 yards. Nice marks on the reticle for quick reference and turrets if you want to dope it.

Vortex Spitfire 1x or 3X
Burris AR-332

Reasonably priced, great quality PRISM scopes that fit into the red dot approach, but without the starburst effect. I LOVE the 2 Spitfires and 1 Burris that I have. Will never buy a red dot again.

Another vote for Spitfire 3x. No astigmatism starburst, just a little mag, and clear. Just about perfect for your 200 yard goal with small targets. If you can see your targets already at 200, don't bother (or use the 1x Spitfire). If they are comfortable to shoot at ~70yards, then 3x will be great. If not, you might want more.

Thanks guys, off to the shops tomorrow. The spitfire seems interesting, but I'll check the glass too.

@JimP42 I'm old enough that I need all the magnification I can get out past 100!

That's one thing that's nice about the 3x Spitfire, unless you are speed shooting and HAVE to have a 1x, it's a crisp 3x dot (better reticle than a plain dot actually), which you can use all sorts of ways in the future where you would normally use a dot, but it's 3x. If you like it of course.

The next step up are the various quality levels of 1-4 or 1-6 scopes. Very versatile and usable for any rifle up to 400ish yards, or maybe only 250-300 with really poor eyes.

This.....I have a Remington bolt in 300 blackout and the Nikon P300 BLK works great and the glass is real good!!!!

Jim I have a Spitfire 1x sitting in the safe if you want to try before you buy. I don't want to sell but I'm not ready to use it yet.

Don't let the goofy appearing "circle dot" reticle on the spitfire throw you. It's actually very effective.

Appreciate that, and if I can't make up my mind at the store I'll take you up on it!

I have the Leupold VX-HOG on my 300blk AR. It's a 1-4. I bought it in a black Friday sale. Hindsight says I could have went with something in the straight 4x category and been just fine. I have it dialed up to 4 now and don't see me cranking it back down to 1x for any reason.

I have it sighted in at 80yds, with my farthest shots being maybe 110-120yds in the stand.

I know this helps a lot. Lol.

Actually helps a ton! Always good to remember that lot of weight and size (and money) can be saved with a fixed optic and most of the time it isn't hard to work within the constraints of fixed magnification. The Leupold that @Slacker suggested would be a great option in this regard, but discontinued. Might find one used, or look at other similar offerings if the Spitfire 3x or Nikon P300blk don't tickle my fancy.

I have the Burris AR-332 (3x) and a Lupold 1-4. I found them not high enough power for my liking.

I'm now looking at either a 1-6 or 8 or something like a 2-10 or 12.

Just my $0.02.

Thanks, at what range do you want higher magnification, and what size targets/groups are you after?

For me, anything 100 yards and over is hard to see with these.
