Hello,

I just bought a Ruger Charger Take down 10/22 and wanted some suggestions for a below $250 optic. It'll be a back pack gun so I'd like something with some magnification for dropping squirrels but still be able to hit short range targets easy. Just have no clue which direction to go.

Thank you.

I think the answer depends on how you plan on mounting it. Do you want to mount it on a cantilever mount on the barrel, or a traditional mount on the receiver? I've heard there are zero issues with mounting in on the receiver, but I think you will have to deal with eye relief if mounting on the barrel/forend.

Either way - I'm sure @rantingredneck has 3-4 different setups like this already and can point you in the right direction.

FWIW - I have a takedown rifle I'm looking for the same thing. I'm leaning towards a cantilever mount on the barrel forend using a Vortex diamondback or crossfire rimfire 2-7x. Another option I'm considering is a fixed power prism sight. That way you get the benefit of a scope plus the ability for an illuminated red dot type reticle.

EDIT: this had me thinking more about my setup. it seems that if you set the tension correctly on the takedown mechanism, it will hold zero. I may need to test this theory out.

I played around with different cantilever and scout options on the 10/22 TD without much success getting eye relief, height over bore and other issues worked out YMMV there.

On my Charger, Charger TD, and 10/22 TD(s) I have various non-magnified red dots from PA and Holosun represented.

Were I doing a magnified optic though I'd look hard at a 1-4 or 2-7 solution. Vortex, Nikon, lots of reasonably priced options there. Nikon is closing out their rifle scope biz though so factor that in....

I recently (as in 2 weeks ago) finally put a Bushnell TRS-25 on my 10/22 takedown receiver. I've had the red dot for a few years. I just got around to buying the rail from Ruger. So far I like it. No magnification obviously. I enjoyed plinking with it the other day. That's all I got for ya'.
