I’ve ordered a PSA 9mm Glock complete lower, on sale now for $179 shipped so I am in need of an upper. I know I want a 16” barreled upper, PSA is out of stock. My question is what are the pros and cons with going with other brand uppers or building one from parts.

I got mine from Delta team tactical and barrel. It does not lock back on the last shot.

Make sure when you buy a bolt that works with a Glock magazine and not a Colt. Been there and did that.

My knowledge is somewhat limited on 9mm ARs, but I did just build one from PSA parts. My take is that the upper is not unique. At the most, you might have to make sure the bolt that you use will headspace properly with the barrel.

As far as which bolt to use in your case, it will definitely have to be milled to work specifically with the Glock mags. PSA has the hybrid bolt that is guaranteed to work with their lower. I believe there are others that will work (New Frontier may be one) but you might be best to wait for the PSA upper to come back in stock. If you get on their mailing list, you will get the daily specials and quite often I have seen the complete 16" uppers (with bolt and charge handle) show up for $400-$420.

The one I just built was for Colt mags. It had a headspace issue that I had to send it back to PSA to get fixed. They paid for shipping both ways and it was gone for 2 weeks. Came back working great. The thing I like about the colt mag version is that it DOES lock the bolt back on an empty mag - the Glock version does not.

Toprudder you are 100% correct about PSA bolts and the Glock lower. The receiver is anyone that will work with an AR15 or 9.

If you are in the Raleigh/ Garner area I'm a PSA dealer and can order any of their items on their site. Sometimes I can even get things that they have as out of stock. Most recently I picked up four of their 9mm uppers at a pretty good price below their website price.

Cmmg makes a 9mm bolt that is glock cut.
Mine has held up really well. Honestly, I expected it to fail by now.
It also has the pinned in rear weight so you can remove it if you desire.
That is a non negotiable feature to me.

Yes, if it did not need the weight, they would not have included it.

Since it is a blowback design, the weight is needed to slow the movement of the bolt until the pressure has dropped. An extra heavy buffer is also desirable, I got one from Kaw Valley that is also a little longer so spacers are not needed.

JP does not use a weight in their AR9 bolt.
Nor do they use a heavy buffer.

I removed the weight from my CMMG bolt and replaced the silly heavy buffer with a JP SCS.
It's a whole new carbine. Splits went down easily 25%.
The downward "dot dip" that all the reciprocating forward weight caused was gone.
Thousands of rounds later, not a single problem. Full disclosure, I did break a bolt catch same day I installed the SCS.
I replaced it with a Seekins and it's been fine, I think it was just a cheap part.

I had a Slash 9Q prior to the SCS.
I'll never go back to that clunky heavy buffer system. It sucked.

I've been wondering about this as well. I bought the KAK 9MM 10oz heavy/extended buffer, and you can feel that thing moving in there. Been pondering getting one of those "silent" buffer/spring combos now that I have my can.

I'd still use mine if it made the gun louder.
Made a world of difference in the shoot-ability of it in PCC.
I also swapped the upper to a gibbz side charger. Much nicer to use, plus less gas in my face. Good upgrade for
a suppressed gun.

Yeh - I have the new frontier side charger. I wouldn't buy the buffer solely for quieter performance, would just use that as an opportunity to upgrade and get smoother shooting and quieter.

Rs1200xl, I hope that you have a bout 1000+ rounds loaded for the gun. I shoot that gun more than any other gun that I have and it seems that 9mm is the only round that I have been reloading.

You are going to have some fun

But the JP bolt IS a heavy bolt. From their website:

In fact, when combined with our JPSCS-9MM, you have the heaviest, most reliable 9mm operating system that dramatically reduces bolt bounce while improving accuracy.

Not saying that the JP system isn't an improvement, just saying that the extra mass is necessary for the blowback design.

I'll have to check my bolt, I don't think it will work with the JP buffer if I remove the weight. :( I can't see spending $385 for the complete JP system including the bolt.

Yup, my C-more comes in Monday too. Plan to use it in uspsa after area 6 match. I'm also going to be looking into the blitzkrieg hydraulic buffer.

Did you have to shrink your 9mm oal reloads to chamber correctly? Seen that as a complaint on the original barrels.

I have my dies set for Xtreme 124 gn bullets and after they are loaded the go into a 30 cal ammo box. When I take the AR-9 and my 9mm pistols and the ammo come out of that box. So to answer your question, no.

I do not know if it matters but I am using an E.R. Shaw 16" barrel

So all of you who have the 9mm builds, can you list the parts for your entire builds? Also, any other parts you would or wouldn't recommend?

Thanks everyone. Got an email today from Nordic Components about their new PCCs. I have a good bit of their stuff on my Benelli guns and love it. The price doesn't seem to be bad. If they are $1,600 MSRP, I bet street price is closer to $1,300. I could be wrong though. You can also swap the magwell and it has LRBHO.
