Going to try surf fishing for the first time. Looking forward to it. Will be staying for a week or so at Kitty hawk.

Been surf fishing the Carolina's since the 70s. Get Mullet and cut it into hook size pieces and go for it. Never had much luck with shrimp. And hook size maters. I use #1-0 hooks, keeps the little fish from getting it into their mouth. Mullet is good for Blues, Whiting, and many other fish will take it.
I use 10' to 15' rods with open face and bait casting reals.

And when some jerk asked you if your fishing for sharks because your using cut bait, just tell them, NO, I'm fishing for blues.

Enjoy your fishing trip.

Thanks. Been watching several videos of OBX fishing when I get home from work in the evenings. I’ve heard about any fish you catch in the ocean puts up a better fight than most freshwater fish.

If you have a 4wd, I'd highly suggest going down to the point at Hatteras for a day of fishing.
And if the catwalks have reopened on the old Oregon Inlet bridge, those are another great spot.
