I was browsing and found a 2" diameter by 12" long form 1 suppressor kit...… (this one to be exact https://www.form1builder.com/product/2-lapua-338-rifle-solvent-trap-kit-12-long/) and was curious about how this would sound on say a 9mm rifle such as a Ruger PC9. Would it be any quieter than what's already on the market for 9mm (the typical 1.375 diameter by 7.5 inch length) offered by manufacturers such as Silencerco, AAC, Griffin, etc.?

Probably not. Law of diminishing returns. Consider that one of the most popular 9mm cans is 1.48”x4.7” (Omega 9K). And there are a couple 1.25” 9mm cans that perform well. It’s more about baffle design and spacing in a lot of cases.

Unrelated: even at that size, no way I’m putting an all aluminum can on a 338 Lapua

Ive got a AAC Tirant 45 and a 9mm Tirant. The 45 can is significantly quieter on a 9mm than the smaller dedicated 9mm silencer even with the much larger bore . Same baffle design.

No way in hell I'd run a screw together aluminum silencer on a 338. No way.

Serious question.

Significantly quieter?
Or sounds significantly better?

Those are two different things. I ask that because in general a 9 and 45 or then same line will meter pretty close to one another. What you lose with a larger bore you gain with the larger volume. However, the larger volume tends to produce a deeper tone, which the human ear finds more pleasant. You can have a can that meters 5-8dB louder, but most will say sounds better.

And I’d agree that to an extent, larger may be better. But a 2”x12” on a 9mm rifle is way beyond the peak of the diminishing returns curve. :D

Quieter and a deeper tone. Everyone Ive known that Ive gone shooting with has said the same thing. Quieter on a 9mm than my old SWR Trident 9mm can too.

Thanks fellas.......imma keep dreamin of how to recreate the magical delisle carbines claimed 85 decibels.

Just put the microphone in the next room.

Way back 28 years ago I built a Form 1 silencer. First incarnation was a perforated tube wrapped with fiberglass pipe insulation. 12 inches long two inches wide like an old Sionics can. First shot through it was out of an open bolt Mac 10 45 ACP. One shot in the mag just to see what it would do. Pulled the trigger I thought it misfired. I was up in the mountains and saw the pond I was aiming at splash . That silencer was good for about 5 rounds before the packing went away but it was damn quiet for the first few rounds. Then it blew the end cap off and I rebuilt it as a baffled silencer and it was nowhere near as quiet but it stayed in one piece...for a while .

There's only one way to make it quiet er.

You have to film yourself shooting with whatever can you like. Then edit the video dubbing in those Hollywood "pwish" sound effects.
