I'm looking to get a OWB holster for use at the range. I'm still rather new to pistols in general so I figured I should ask here.

I'm thinking about getting the T Rex Arms Ragnarok. I like how it works with accessories mounting hardware from several other major brands.

Ive used fobus and bladetech because i only use then at the range, for carry I use iwb. The bladetech IMO is way better than the fobus.

Get a bladetech and call it a day. They are perfect for range/competition use and relatively inexpensive.

I recently got a Comp-Tac QB-1. It's one of those multiple different guns holster. Modular, as they say.

Not uncommon for me to take quite a few handguns to the range, and all the specific holsters was a pita so I figured I'd try this thing.
Surprisingly, it works good. Fits all my Glocks, M&P's, and Walther. The Walther is the fattest so I have to adjust the tension for that one, which allows a bit more play on the others but it's not bad. They don't rattle around or anything and stay put. My only real ding is the clip attachment needs to go in front of or behind the belt loop, it won't straddle it.
Overall I'm pleased. A quality product. 8 out of 10.

I have one of their IWB kydex holsters and like it for the most part. Although, one day I did have one of the screws walk out and the whole thing go all cockeyed. Luckily the screw went down my pant leg and into my shoe, lol! Little bit of thread locker should hopefully keep it from doing that again.

I was gonna order one of those holsters cause it sounds like a good solution. Now, I wonder whether you could post links to where you buy your pants and shoes. Seems it needs to be an integrated system if I want it to function reliably.

:D

Personally, I don't use any holster specifically for the range. I have my EDC holstered IWB. Everything else in in my range bag.
At Uwharrie, rules are that you can only have one weapon hot at a time. Otherwise it must be in the range box with magazine out and action open.
When I go to Calibers I may have two pistols on the table, actions open and mags next to them. I have not been to any range that allows shooting from draw.

Precisely why I built my own makeshift pistol range. It ain't much but I've found the RSO to be very flexible.

:D

Same with my range, and we even permit IWB.
We don't even require demonstrations of competency, we just stand behind the shooter's offhand.

;)

I dont know I felt looked down on a little bit at that range o_O j/k.....they had some sweet steel though for sure lol

It would good to know the type of pistol and your goals and needs.

Do you want a holster that will work with any belt?
Do you want more of a competition style with a dedicated belt system?

How did you make your range...or did you already tell me? And how much space does it need? Thanks!

@Millie, remember your questions about shooting trees? Most of us agreed the top priority is having a backstop (preferably earthen) tall and wide enough that a "flyer" can't possibly get past. In my case, I was lucky enough to find a gully and built my range at the bottom.

Wander around your property and see if you can find such a place with a natural backstop. The rest is pretty easy and needn't cost much at all.

:)

Well, I'm screwed...it's flat as a table here! I remember a lot of talk about berms awhile ago.....and hay bales.

There's no place that water flows thru the property during/after a heavy rain?

Then you need a friend with a Skid Steer.

To push the dirt up into a big old mound to catch the rounds! Nice! I bet the vineyard owners have one!!! Or more.....might have to check it out! Still need to call and see if I'm allowed to shoot in my yard...never heard back from the sheriff about that. I'm outside the town limits, so maybe...

You'd be surprised how many people own them. I'm bettin you're not far from somebody who'd be happy to help you out for a couple hours.

It would be a short-ish area. Not a big lot. Might get 50'+ or so from driveway to back of the lot before hitting the wooded area. That would do, right? I could have it slope down to a big wall o' dirt! Does that sound like it would work? If I can scrape up/slope down to where the back is 15' top to bottom?

When I first put together my makeshift range for shooting paper, I only worried about getting 3, 5 and 7 yards back to practice for the CHP test (which you've already passed with flying colors so YMMV). I'm also able to get back to about 25 yards or so easily.

Later on, I wanted some steel and common wisdom says not to shoot that from closer than 11 yards. For that reason, I put the steel 8 yards back from the paper (actually two clotheslines tied to trees, targets hung between them with clothespins). So the steel is anywhere from 11 to almost 35 yards away from "the line".

I do most of my shooting at the steel, 11 to 25 yards. I'm able to get back almost 50 yards but it means shooting through some foliage.

You'd be wise to listen to this guy. He's got a nice range, put some good thought into it and it shows.

Ohhh and the best is my kids join me, good wholesome family fun

I’m partial to Vedder Holsters. Great stuff.
