My older son has a 12ga Shockwave that he bought used. It was in great shape but the parkerized barrel had some nicks on it. He had originally wanted to cerakote the whole thing but I told him let's try to DIY it first.
Usually that ends up in disaster but this time it worked out well. Except for 'Magpul FDE' Alumahyde doesn't exactly match Magpul FDE furniture, it's a bit lighter. And doesn't match the "FDE" colored SBA3 brace at all, it's more of a coyote. So we will probably be buying the Coyote color in the next brownell's order.

Anyhow I cleaned the barrel with mineral spirits and brake cleaner first. Then after shaking the Alumahyde for a while I sprayed 2 light coats about 15 minutes apart and then let it dry about 30 minutes. Then much to the wife's dismay I baked it in our oven for 3 hrs. The temp of the part should be 195 deg F so I monitored it with a laser thermometer. Ended up having to set the cheap Kenmore oven to 250F.

Parts hanger is a wire coat hanger from a dry cleaner that had the cardboard in the middle. I removed the cardboard and wrapped the ends with electrical tape.

I wish I had taken better close up pics before he snatched it back. I got a pretty good first coat but I didn't like the black showing thru on the warning printed on the barrel, so the 2nd coat took care of that. Really smooth finish too, I patted myself on the back and a little on the front afterward ;)

Thanks man. Contemplating using this stuff as a base layer to do a backwoods version of Marpat....maybe with little "Molon Labe" and DTOM stencils as the small elements lmao
Give it a try. Never know what it’ll look like until you try it. I think it will look good.

Looks like it turned out pretty darn good!

I haven't tried Alumahyde, although I know Brownell's has had it for a long time. How durable is it?

Once it hardens up, it's quite durable. I have an 870 in dark gray that gets tossed around on camping trips that still looks quite good. Metal prep, as always, is the key.

It is an epoxy finish.

@Ikarus1 did you pick that color on purpose or was it on sale?

:D:D:D:D:D Just messing wichya. That looks good. Did the baking smell up the house? I tried to fast dry some paint one time and it smelled pretty strong for a while. Haven't done it since. :)

Got it for a free after using a $15 off 150 coupon lol.

Wife didnt know what I was doing and it didnt smell much since I let it dry for a little while in the garage before I put it in the oven.

I added more pix

Turned out amazing. But wondering if you serve red or white wine with baked scattergun ?

White to complement the delicate shot like #9, #7-1/2, or even #4. Definitely need red to balance the heavier shot like BB up to 00 Buck.

I would be very interested in knowing how well it holds up to several hundred rounds of ammo and being tossed around in a truck tool box.

Looks good mate!

I think you've got me convinced to do some sort of paint job on my AR pistol handguard.

Mine has around 200 shells through it since I painted it. It doesn't live in a tool box, but does get tossed in the trunk for any road trip. The crappy Remington bead blast blue is actually a very good base for the alumahyde, just clean very well with acetone.

In the link is a pic of it fresh before I shot it and swapped furniture. You can see the muzzle blast has just left some powder marks that I won't bother to clean. The slide has abraded the tube a little and I'm sure will eventually wear through. I dremelled the sharp ejection port down and the paint did not adhere well to this area. If I feel like fixing this it should be a simple matter of roughing the area and respraying.

If you decide to do it, follow Brownells video on the matter closely. Make sure to get some clean out nozzles (they blow out the globs) and extra fan nozzles (cheap insurance).

OPs shotty looks great!

Dont waste your time on clean out nozzles. Get you some 2 for $5 wearever CFC free brake cleaner at Advance auto. That will serve 2 purposes. First of all it's the same thing as Powder Blast gun cleaner. It removes all oils from surfaces for painting or re-oiling on any metal surface. That's the only prep you need on a parkerized or matte blued surface.

Secondly I take the nozzle from the alumahyde can and put it on the brake cleaner and spray it clean. Voila.

Just FYI you can clean out most rattle can paints by flipping the can over and spraying it out until the only thing that comes out is the gas. Do this plus brake cleaner for long term storage of any paint
