Panic ammo buying?

Oddly, I can understand hoarding TP more than I can panic buying ammo. We have had years of good prices on ammo to buy what we need, and to stash away for a rainy day. >If< there was an apocalypse level event, no one is going to be shooting their ammo the same way and the same volumes we are now. And if you had a “battle” then after a few hundred rounds you are either dead, picking up the pieces, or getting out of the area.

TP, on the other hand, will be a daily use item that once depleted will have only less attractive replacement options. A 500 round case of 9mm May last decades...a 48 roll pack of charmin would last my family of 6 about two months...maybe.

At $287 per thousand it’s not a good enough deal.

Add in shipping of course its not. I posted it as a joke. What you also have to remember not to long ago $.30 for decent 556/223 was a buy it now price. We have been seeing the lowest prices in 10-15 years in the last 12 months.

I’m thinking of setting up a table, on the sidewalk in front of Outdoor Limited, and selling my WalMart ammo. :D

The .22 LR "shortage" a few years ago should have been a learning experience. Since then, people have had plenty of time to stash back a few rounds of ammo. Ammo has been plentiful and and at reasonable prices. Yet, there will be people that will be caught without ammo on hand. They will be complaining that they can't find ammo or if they can find it, it will be priced higher "than I used to buy it".

I have plenty of ammo. Just can’t build up a stockpile to serve me anxiety free for unknown number of years. I shoot few thousand per year

I had that problem a few years back, then @Slacker introduced me to reloading and it turns out that I find it addictive. I’m buying a gatling gun to keep up with my reloading habit.

I don’t enjoy reloading very much, but have few thousand rounds of supplies on hand if comes to that. I’m a millennial, I like my sh!} delivered to the door where I can just pick it up and lug it into my safe space.

They are going to start shooting you for your toilet paper and hand sanitizer! That's why they are panic buying ammo.
Saw a post today that said a guy spent about ten days driving all over Tennessee buying up all the sanitizer and wipes he could find. After Amazon found out what he was doing they pull him from there adds . The guy is stuck with 17,740 bottles of hand sanitizer. He was trying to sell it for up to $40 a bottle.

I'm not panic buying but I may hold off shooting the 9mm I picked up to break in my new pistol...

This is why I always suggest dollar cost averaging buying ammo among other things. Set up a regular buying routine that fits the amount you shoot and your budget. Multiply that by how many months you think a panic will last. Buy to build up to that number and maintain it.

Snatch up good deals when you see them in bulk but buying even small amounts at the right price helps. I was buying the Browning 9mm 124gr 150 packs for $25 with free shipping a couple times a month for a while. Just a few boxes to keep my inventory where I wanted them.

I am always looking for deals so that is why I noticed prices moving up and then literally overnight inventories were wiped out.

I don’t enjoy reloading very much....

I do.

Off work, sit at the bench all day, chugging coffee and listening to 98.1 on the radio.

It’s one of my Zen.

Starting with sized/trimmed/primed cases, I can usually crank out 200-250 cartridges per hour...by suppertime, I feel like I accomplished a lot.

I did just buy 500 rounds of 147gr 9mm ball, but it's because I'm doing a systematic test (yes, I'm an engineer) of my G19, M&P 2.0 Compact, Sig P365, and Shield across 115, 124, and147gr bullet weights. I've read lots of stuff online, but I want real data on velocity and POI vs POA, in MY firearms. I already have a good bit of 115 and 124, but not enough 147, for said testing.

I just Checked the website for SGAmmo. Two week lead time before orders ship. Either Sam's packing these all by himself because of the kung flu, or he's THAT busy. Even during the Clinton and Obama panics the lead time was never two weeks.

Had a chat with the rep from Georgia Arms today at the show. I'm sure everyone knows they make ammo. The lady told me they had enough 9mm and 223/556 set back for the next few shows they were attending based on prior sales., but the factory had very little in stock and most bullet weights were already out. Not sure how much she was on top of things at the factory, but she did say that they were running 7 days around the clock and could not keep up with orders right now. Like @BatteryOaksBilly said yesterday the best sales pitch ever is "you can't get none".

Bought a metric crap ton of powder & primers right after Sandy Hook, as well as stacking what ammo I could, along with brass & bullets. I'll weather this panic/drought just fine. Once the stupidity abates a bit, I'll get back to work on stacking it even deeper.

Prices are rising in the short term. Some stuff has jumped up in price overnight by $.02-$.04 a round.

I've talked to a couple projectile vendors today, they have been working 16, even 24 hrs to keep up

Thanks for the business Corona

We need to get you a second machine.

Last year in Illinois the tyrants in Springfield floated a bill that would have created an ammo registry. That was the push I needed to buy reloading stuff. Components would have remained unregulated. Of course, the dealer licensing bill then passed and that meant the state would have a registry of all new gun sales that were conducted legally. I bought a house down here shortly thereafter.

Everybody is basically out of 9mm except maybe one brand in target ammo. Even that has doubled it price. 556 is scarce. My son text me today about buying some. I looked at 6 websites and found just a few who had some but it was almost double the past cheap prices.

I don’t need any but I want more. Just not at these prices. One website had shutdown due to volume and their stores went to 5 hours Mon-Friday. They were open 9 hours and 7 days a week.

I would like to thank the one person that was pretty much responsible in modifying my behavior when it came to ammo. I was persuaded to buy a box or two, even if I didn't need it, whenever we went shopping. I'd also like to thank that same person for nudging me into reloading, so now I can melt and mold and powder coat and reload as much as I want. So here's a great big shout out to that guy.....

THANKS B.H.O.!!!!

Just noticed that SG Ammo has stopped accepting orders for the time being so that they can catch up.

They stopped taking orders because they don't have any inventory. LMAO The 9mm page is blank.

I just got an email from Target Sports USA the bottom line was **Please expect 10-day shipping delay on all orders due to the increase demand.**

I now grudgingly accept the serious nature of the virus ... the ammo-buying virus, that is. Underwood - of all ammo people - is reporting delays in order fulfillment and is sold out of (at least) two varieties of .308. Given what I assume is still a niche market customer base for them, I was taken by surprise.

I made *one* panic purchase ever. I bought 10k SPP after sandy hook and paid way too much for them.
Since then I've been finding deals and buying in smaller quantities as I use up old stock. But I've kept one unopened 5k box from that panic buy to remind me never to do that stupid crap again.
