Panic Buying and Hoarding for the Eclipse

I know a guy that thinks Jesus is coming back on the the 21st. I think he's an idiot. He also believes the world is flat and that a different species of human or alien live in a huge cave in Antarctica.

Hey, you ever been to Antartica? Shut up fool. :p

One of the traffic advisory signs on Hw 264 today said "Solar Eclipse August 21, 2017 - Plan Ahead." o_O

Glad we got that little tidbit from our state leaders. I wouldn't have had any idea without the nanny state providing that vital piece of information.

Same thing on 40 eastbound today around Mocksville.

What exactly am I planning ahead for?

Zombies? Dinosaurs? A few moments of darkness? Morons blocking the road to stare at the sky? All of the above?

Tell him (in a hushed, conspiratorial tone) that the 21st is 13.0.4.13.4 on the Maya Long Count calendar. And, that the eclipse reaches maximum at 1304 in Omaha, NE, home of US Strategic Command (see: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/omaha).

77 south just outside of Statesville said the same

Got a pair of the glasses today...holy crap, you cant see ANYTHING through them except for the sun. Im looking forward to Monday.

Went by a major welding supply house in GSO this morning. The counter guy said that they sold out of Shade 14 lenses 3 weeks ago...

I've got a pair of shade 5 glasses, and a pane of #10 glass. With the two combined, I think I'll be ok.

I bought some 35mm film. Instant low budget eclipse goggles.

So when it's in totality will it still damage the naked eye?

I went through my welding supplies and found some #10 and #12 shades - I'm all set.

#12 or higher for safety.

Viewing with Protection -- Experts suggests that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is welders glass of sufficiently high number. The only ones that are safe for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes are those of Shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number. If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't even think about using it to look at the Sun. Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter — but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find. The AAS Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page(link is external) doesn't list any suppliers of welder's filters, only suppliers of special-purpose filters made for viewing the Sun.To find out more about eyewear and handheld viewers go to https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/eyewear-viewers(link is external).

I cnt imagine that's enough protection after looking thru special actual eclipse glasses. Those things are so dark the o KY thing you can see is the sun....nothing else is bright enough.

Sounds like they missed an opportunity by not planning appropriately

This.
As I stated - you cant see ANYTHING except the sun through them. I thought they'd just be heavily tinted and you'd be able to see a little out of them....NAH. NOTHING.

Only two things I saw when I put them on outside was the sun and the reflection of the sun in the hood of my car.

This is exposed undeveloped film, you can't see anything except the sun through it. It is just a little weak in attenuation though when looking at a high elevation sun (as it will be during the eclipse) and doubled over I can still see the sun but it is quite dim. I expect that during the actual eclipse one layer will be sufficient.

I may try the one layer with some dark sunglasses.

I stacked a #10 welding shade on a #5 torch shade and it's plenty dark for sungazing. You are right, #10 was not enough by itself.

I posted in another thread on this topic - the issue with the solar eclipse is looking at it wont hurt your eyes like if you looked up at the sun today. It plays a trick, of sorts, on your brain, doesnt hurt you, but WILL BLIND YOU/CAUSE DAMAGE PERMANENTLY.

Do be careful if not using the approved methods for witnessing the event.

Correct, it's because of the damaging UV rays
