Found this place in Merrick, NY last weekend on a trip up to 'Wrong' Island to visit the Red-headed Stepchild. Gooooooood pastrami!!

Their hot pastrami sandwich. The only fault I can find with it was that the bread wasn't toasted.

Their version of sliders. You got one with pastrami, one with corned beef and one with brisket. The brisket, while falling apart tender, was crying out for some kind of sauce. Onion rings were good too.

And a side of fries.

Interestingly enough, this was not the restaurant that Kate's boyfriend wanted to take us to. That one was closed for the holiday. If it's any better, I wanna try it!

Holy crap that looks good. My first boss in my first real job was an old Navy guy (obligatory hula girls on his forearms) who introduced me to Leo's, a real old school jewish deli in Charlotte 40 years ago, and of course hot pastrami sammiches.

Just looked up Leo's...apparently it closed in 2010 (after 68 years). :(

I like pastrami!!! Jus sayin...

58 Deli Diner up in VA Beach will get you a good NY sammich. And the hot pastrami will satisfy you. It is a lot closer and doesn't require surrendering your natural rights.

I never do, that's why I'm glad they ship... ;)

A guy with cooking skills like yours should just make your own pastrami. My guess is you'd do just fine. I've done a couple corned beefs and they came out very nice. Maybe I'll try a pastrami next time I get a chance.

I've done corned beef before and it was good. Meatcraft is an art form. I am a solid cook, I do great fresh sausages and some cured meats. It's a lot of work and learning curve. Something like that, I leave to the pros for now. A good pastrami on rye sangwich from Katz's Deli in NYC or Jo-el's Kosher Grocery in St Pete's is a thing of beauty...

Lindley Park Filling Station does a pretty good one for local. Not anything like as much meat as the NY sandwich but I swear the flavor is better. I think they throw the pastrami on the grill to get it hot before they make the sandwich.

It's more than just the meat. The bread has to be made in-house, kosher potato salad and pickle on the side too... The right mustard, like Webber's... The ratio of meat to bread is critical IMO as well. Honestly, Jason's deli does a good job in that department. The New York Yankee is a solid 'wich with a pile o' meat on it. They just don't have that legit, fresh deli taste to their bread and meats...

I'll check out Jason's but since it would require going to NY (or ordering from Katz) to get what you're talking about, I'll make do.

That being said.....have you ever had a "Sailor" sandwich?

Jason's is a chain. They're everywhere... Decent sammiches, good salad bar, and free ice cream for everyone...

That's the one with sausage on it right? I've never had one, but would be willing to try it...

Jason's ain't no sammich. Keep driving unless the Mrs wants a salad.

As far as what passes for a sammich around here, it's not bad. I've tried 'em all. Trust me. Everyone says, "try such and such deli, it's really good"... Please. There are no REAL delis around here. If you think there are, it's because you've never been to a legit deli. They're either hipster BS joints making upiddy sandwiches with little meat and big price tags or just another boar's head joint slinging the same meat in varying quantities on US Foods latest bread delivery... May as well be Subway...

Yep. Subway does equal Jason's, McCallister's etc. Over on Morrisville they had a decent NY Deli if not totally authentic, but the it died. Too small, and not real focused. Not sure most areas around here want a real deli. I lived in NJ for a short time and the only things I miss are the deli's and bagels. Those poor SOB's have some good food if nothing else.
