Not exactly a DIY,
But I figured it’s enough of a PSA that the forum should know.

In December I paid off my Apple Watch at AT&T in the store. I told them to cancel the account. I then traded in that Apple Watch for a new Apple Watch Ultra from Verizon.
Cut to today, nearly 6 months later.
I received a bill from AT&T.
It’s only $61, and they kept the line on my Apple Watch open. Ooops. Sorry, we see that you switched to Verizon at that time but we kept it open for you.
I had explicitly asked the customer rep in store to make sure I owed nothing and the account was closed. He lied or was incompetent or both.

Be careful when dealing with this company as they are liars and thieves, and functionally retarded.

They all suck and will over bill and double bill and everything else just to see if they can get away with it and see if you will pay. They know from past history and analytics that most will pay without question. I returned a T Mobile wireless internet "gateway" the day I got it and I had receipt and they admitted that I did and that I cancelled my account that day and they still billed me for 6 mos and sic'd a collection agency on me. I cc'd the collection agency on all my correspondence and paperwork. I got a call from a CS VP apologizing but that was it.

AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile collectively control 90% of the cellular market. There is no reason for any one of them to improve anything as we only have limited choices.
If you leave one of them, they dont care. Its no big deal to them because customers leave one of the three for another one of the three daily. Very few people go to any of the smaller companies.

The AT&T store we use seems to only ever have teenage employees. Something like thst happened to us and I’d just assume was young incompetence. No different than getting your fast food order wrong.

I must be getting old because “kids these days…..”

Back when I actually went in AT&T locations I learned there are "company" stores and franchised stores. The customer service at the franchise stores was always barely above being able to breath and keep their eyes open. Not saying the company stores were outstanding but they were definatley where you wanted to go for help over the other option.

Should have billed them for your time and sic'd the collection agency on them when they didn't pay.

What really gets me is when they neglect to send invoices for a few months and add finance charges. I really hate ATT
Exactly
Had they sent me a bill a month later I could have handled it.
They kept the account for six months then sent me a bill.

Imagine what I went through to get this. I’m tempted to tear it up to mess with their bookkeeping. 😂

They're ALL the debil....ALLLLLL of them. You hear me Bobby Boucher? They're the debil!

Verizon shafted me way back in like 2000. I finished my contract and switched to Nextel. Some months later, I get a bill in the mail for $50. Just straight up $50 with no explanation. I threw it away. Couple months later, a collection notice for $50. So I call Verizon, get bounced around, finally talk to some dude in the basement of one of their buildings. He says "I don't know dude...they do this to people all the time. You just gotta pay it." That strengthened my resolve to not pay it. A couple more months go by and I get a settlement offer for $25. I pay it to make it go away.

That's when I learned abut paying those offers and the effect on your credit score. BAM!

So,
Follow up-
They said they would erase the debt they claimed I owed and send me double the difference back.
The difference was $120+…
They did send me a credit for $64 and the debt is gone, so acceptable outcome, but not what they promised.

When I left Verizon I was paying $150 monthly and they told me my account would be zero after I paid the final bill AND there wouldn't be any termination fees. I switched to T-Mobile... Several months later I get a Verizon bill for $175 termination fee.....They threatened to send it to collection. I paid the $175 to get rid of them. They offered to refund back the $175 AND give me two months free service if I would come back.... I told them I have excellent service with T-mobile @ $80 a month....there are thieves and liars at Verizon too!!!!
