I'm contemplating buying an air rifle for target and pest control. Don't want to spend too much but have a couple in mind and figured our vast community might have ideas and advise. So far, I'm leaning towards .177 caliber and would like to know your thoughts on this versus .22.

The two models I'm looking at are the Gamo Raptor Whisper Air Rifle and the Ruger Blackhawk Combo air rifle

Any good or should I look at others?

Let the knowledge and thoughts flow

Here’s a recent thread that would be worth reading.

I think the general consensus in the airgun community is .177 if you only want to target shoot and .22 if you want to hunt at all. Of course, either can pull double duty.

I have a Diana 34 and it’s fantastic. If I was buying right now, I’d get the 34 on sale at Numrich for $200. I may just get a spare at that price.

Had a scoped RWS [Diana] 24 since mid '90s but sold it a few years ago; you guys made me go and spend another $230 . . . but having owned a Diana before I cant pass this up. Plus no primers needed . . .

Only regret selling my scope with the 24. May need to pick up an inexpensive optic for this, have a squirrel living in my barred owl nesting box that needs some relocation assistance . . .

Any 2x-4x scope recommendations nowadays? Can a red dot survive a spring piston air rifle? May be all I need.

Now that I think of it I may prefer an aperture peep rear sight - I have a few Williams and already have the target aperture insert for this.
Put a similar peep on my Fieldmaster pump 22 and absolutely love it !!

A real help for aging eyes; have dots on a dozen guns or more but my astigmatism blurs the dot for precision shooting.

I didn't know this was a thing. Would work with a standard front sight you think?

Front sight height is always the magic question - a definite 'maybe.'
When I get the 34 I'll measure and post front sight height above bore; many times a receiver mount will sit higher but I have seen posts on other forums about needing a shorter front sight. Hard for me to picture that but the Williams height above receiver groove is published so Ill measure when my 34 arrives.
I can cheat and switch the similar sight from my Remington to test, might not disturb zero too much when I put it back.

An added bonus here is a much longer sight radius - remember folks that even M1 Garands and M1As can hold X ring at 600+ yards with a basic receiver peep sight setup. A word of difference.

Numrich came thru and the Diana 34 is in the rack.
Won't get to sight it in til the weekend but impressed with the heft of this vs my old Model 24. Feels like a real gun. Sights look good, will measure to see if the receiver peep is the right height. But the front bead sits quite high so I am hopeful.

Glad you like it. If it has the T06 trigger (I think that is what it is called), definitely take the time to tweak the adjustments to your liking.

Yes - already reading the adjustment instructions. Now if I can just decipher what 'Pull-off' means for screw # 2 . . . but a factory 500 gram [1.1 lb] maximum pull weight is a nice place to start [adjustable down to 400g / 14 oz ] 😁
