Any places sell #10 or smaller birdshot for "pests" e.g. snakes? Do folks just use the much more common #9 for this purpose?

A .22 pistol with rat shot usually does the trick. And doesn't rattle the neighbors when you shoot it.

I use Winchester AA low recoil/low noise for stuff around the yard. Its not whisper quiet but its quieter than a full 1 1/8 oz target load. It's a 26 gram load of 8's but it will shred a copperhead that I can't dispatch with a stick because they're under the shrubbery. I don't see a need for a smaller shot size in a shotgun in that situation. In a pistol with limited space in the round, smaller size shot makes more sense.

I have to say I've never been real impressed with rat shot on snakes out of a .22. I'm not saying it won't work but it wasn't very effective when I've tried. We were up close to, frog gigging on the banks of ponds. Now snake shot out of a centerfire is a whole nother animal but quite a bit louder.

I had a very wise rat that decided my house was his home. That joker would not take a trap.

So one afternoon I got home from work. Sat down. The house was dead quiet. I heard a cellophane wrapper rustle. I eased to the kitchen and it had it's back to me. I went and got a .22lr pistol with CCI shotshell. It was still there. I ambushed it. The rat was the size of a small cat.

Those shotshell will work.

Thanks for the recommendation. I found some of this and shot it today. Definitely gentle compared to the 3" 1-5/16 XX loads of #5 bird.

Have some photos of my (admittedly not very accurate) patterns taken from today's first shots (over at my break action thread in the Corral).
