More than once, before I had a ladder rack, I have strapped long boards underneath my truck. Lashed them up to the front and rear bumper and took them where I needed to go.

I have done the very same thing with steel in 20 ft sections. Drive over the steel, tie it to both bumpers and head home. Head turning to say the least.

I actually put some 16’ 6x6s in my 5ft bed recently... not ideal but I had to make it work and it was a short drive.
