They measure it one way for LOP, and then a completely different way for OAL (which is important if you want to put a VFG on a “pistol” and make it a “firearm” instead of an AOW).

...and the latest method for OAL is different than it was a couple years ago, and different from how you’d measure it for an SBR. But don’t get used to it, because it’ll probably change another couple dozen times.

In theory, we'd have a supreme court who was willing to slap all this nonsense down on the premise that a largely unregulated agency doesn't have the authority to make ever-changing new opinions that carry the weight of federal law...
but we have a different supreme court than that.

I keep a copy of whichever ATF letter I prefer in my car. I have a whole stack justifying whatever stuff I have (mattered way more in previous state than NC)...

the way I see it, if I hand an officer a bunch of ATF paperwork and he still enough of a c$&) sucker to book me over it, than he is booking you no matter what Because if his ignorance of the law.

at that point you already workin g with lawyers for something even if 100% legal. If you are only 98% legal, what court system is going to prosecute an upstanding citizen with no record to speak of at extreme taxpayer expense because a brace did or didn’t meet some arbitrary rule (not legislated law) from a 3 letter org that shoots children and smuggled guns to cartels?

If the case is not thrown out, well, that’s the risk of be in a gun owner these days man.

Who exactly is going to be checking the measurements?

Have ANY of ya'll EVER had LOP or OAL measurements checked on ANY firearm? (By LE or whatever boogeyman or gestapo is in this scenario)

If they want you they will have you. There will be a special measuring tape just for you I assure you!

The bottom one might be a handgun. But it could also be a rifle. ;)

Yes indeed, a sawed off single shot break action 12 gauge
FWIW they cracked it open first (thereby making it shorter) then measured

They ....local city police
Was in a house, owned by an 18 year old (not a felon), the local pd knew a felon (18 yr. olds step dad) lived in the house, the police were informed by rumor/heresay that the household contained this firearm, they came to the front door and demanded to see said firearm (I think they felt they were on to a felony possession of a firearm, not realizing it was owned by the son) they produced the gun, when they came upon the realization that the gun was owned by the son legally at 18 they figured they would try to nab him on illegal oal, even went as far as “cracking” it open to measure, turns out there was a piece of leather glued to the butt that just placed it as legal
I was present for the circus

As I understand the LOP needs to be less than 13.5. I have an SP Tactical adjustable on a mil spec buffer with an SP Tact insert that limits the LOP to 13.5. Without it it could go longer. Not sure if pistol buffers allow > 13.5 LOP
