Never used one. My dad had an oxyacetylene torch, and I used that a time or two as a kid. I need something to cut metal with and was toying with the idea of getting a real cheapie. I see them advertised for about $150, but know ZERO about using one. I am not going to be huge into fabbing metal and stuff, just basic cutoffs, affixing angle iron to my trailer (so need to cut it first!) and stuff like that.

Any recommendations?

Estimate my knowledge base at "less than zero"and that would be a good place to start.

I've got one of these. Originally sold by Harbor Freight but I can't find it on their website currently. If memory serves, I bought it refurbished from a guy online who went through it and beefed things up. It's been a great machine so far and much more convenient than oxy acetylene. All you need is 220v and an air compressor to run this. No more gasses. I looked back but couldn't find where I bought it or what I paid for it but I typically don't spend a lot and it's worked out in my favor on this one.

This is the guy I bought it through via Ebay.

Which ever one you buy. Get one with pilot arc. That was the regret on the first one I bought. Actually sold it to buy one with pilot arc.

I have a Jegs plasma cutter that is just a cheapo rebranded with their name on it , thing has worked great with no issues. You can buy consumables cheap off of eBay.
