Point Me In A Direction (AR Newbie)

IMO, the Aero M4E1 lower is much nicer than the basic milspec lower. Looks better, feels better, and has nicer features similar to billet lower and is easier to assemble.
Can be had for under 80$. Worth looking at.

Yeah that's a little out of the price range...

I know a guy that has a NIB never fired S&W M&P II that he may be willing to part with. He lives in NC so I guess you would have to go through a FFL which equals more money. Also, you wouldn't get the lifetime warranty. That's only good for the original buyer. I'll ask him what he would take for it.

If it's a rifle it still has to go through an FFL? If that's the case I might just wanna build my own with the kits.

It's because it would be crossing state lines. Aren't you in SC? At least I think you have to use a FFL when crossing state lines. I could be wrong.

Ahhh, yeah I am. I thought it was just handguns.

I'd be looking for it to be chambered in 5.56 . . .

Primary use will be range and home defense, max intended range maybe 80 yards.

Given the distances inside your home, and maximum distance of 80 yards, what do you perceive the benefits are to an AR15 over a pistol caliber carbine, or just a pistol?

Even a suppressed AR15 in 5.56 will be extremely loud inside your hallway or house versus a suppressed sub-sonic pistol caliber.

Yes the 5.56 does more damage and yes the 5.56 does not over penetrate through interior walls as much as pistol calibers, but depending on your home's layout, construction, and your home safety plan, a pistol caliber may be the ticket.

1st post - PSA is a great budget rifle and modular and upgradable.
2nd post - PSA is garbage and avoid at all costs.
3rd post - Save up for a DD!

Looking at what you put up there, I'll give you a fourth one to think about- not all the "name" brands are all they're cracked up to be. There is some brand hype going on and more than a little Koolaide being drunk. It is entirely possible to assemble an AR from a parts catalog that will perform with any name brand and maybe even better. Where to you think DD gets their parts? I seriously doubt they have a forging operation or a barrel making operation onsite and completely dedicated to them. Get high quality parts that are picked to play nice together based on your goal and it is possible to assemble what you want. Case in point, one of the ARs inhabiting my safe will probably outshoot any name brand, but it was assembled to be a target gun for accuracy from match grade parts. I don't think it would be great for any 3gun or CQB games. But to punch paper, I'm yer huckleberry with it.

One other thing, you want the nth degree of accuracy, forget shooting milsurp or factory ammo. Better learn how to handload.

They have been going on sale recently for under $600.

PSA is ok but I'd save a bit to get something nicer like the MPR, comes with two stage triggerm CHF barrel, and the new 16" one comes with B5 furniture.

I buy cheap junk, so I'm no fanboy, but Daniel Defense does hammer forge barrels on sight. Not sure about forging their own receivers, but the owner's goal has always been to work towards making as much in house as possible, they are probably as close as anyone to doing it. Does it make them best or most accurate? not likely, but it probably does a lot to avoid tolerance stacking.

You would be incorrect Sir....

Seems that you have answered your own question....

Just putting forth ideas to consider.

I appreciate all ideas and input. I’m wanting something that’s effective at range that I can stretch if need be, but will also be useful for a variety of things including in the home. My 9mm will go through 4 walls in my 1972 house without even trying. Any round that will do less is worth exploring.

Ok so they now make some barrels, how many are in the winners at NRA HP matches?

uh, probably none. HP matches isn’t exactly the market they’re into. Barrels aren’t the only thing they’re making. In addition to being one of only a few companies who make cold hammer forged barrels, they also have had the contract to make the rails for SOCOM since about 2006.

And that's my point exactly. The AR is a highly flexible design where you have to choose your purpose and configure accordingly.

I recently put togeather a M4gery upper using a stripped LMT 16" barrled upper,Tool Craft BCG, Magpul Slim handguard for $650ish. Buy a complete PSA EPT/Aero etc you have a great rifle for $800ish. Probally could get price down to $700-$750 if you shop deals. Much rather spend the extra 2-300 for something like this than a factory M&P Sport,PSA etc.

Follow up to clarify; instead of gas-piston, go for direct impingement? Or am I missing the mark on this one?

It's talked about a lot that direct gas systems foul up quicker than piston systems and while that is basically correct it bears to remember that the direct system still seems to manage well enough in military service to this day. For the casual shooters like us that won't be an issue.
