Police dash cam shoot out

I have to wonder if that department issues ARs to people on patrol, in a “perfect” world he may have been able to pop the hatch, grab the long gun and go to work per say.

I know many departments require rifles to be carried in the trunk or rear of a vehicle for one reason or another but it appears that far too many departments don’t allow officers to carry rifles, which imo a bad idea.

The bad guy took time to reload while sitting in the car. Good time to use the AR or shotgun.

I do not know what I would have done but if the patrol car (SUV) was still running, maybe run over his ass.

Wild shootout, for sure.
I mean, it almost seemed calm by the way the guy was taking his time to AIM not just spray and pray (at least most of the time).
Glad the officer is ok and that they caught the guy.

There are several times during a traffic stop when the cop is in the most danger.
First he had already mentioned that it looked like the driver was either putting something under the seat or trying to get something from under it. SIGN.....
Then, pulling too close behind the suspect vehicle and noting more movement inside the vehicle. A simple traffic stop should have just became a FELONY traffic stop (back up requested) with gun out, trained on the driver and commands given over the loudspeaker. SIGN...
Once he allow the driver to exit the vehicle and open fire he only has 2 choices, stay where he is and John Wayne it with him or back your ass up to a more advantageous position and engage. IF he had a rifle it would give him time to reach it and then it's all over. In other words, make the perp leave HIS cover to pursue YOU, not the other way around....SIGN....
I didn't see any signs of the perp vehicle or the perp being hit, where in hell were all those shots going?? I saw the perp calmly reload and re-engage but never heard the Deputy reload, did I miss it??
As the Deputy you KNOW there's nobody close enough to get to you in time, why did he just sit there and watch the perp drive off?? He was scared shitless and was happy to let him go so someone else could deal with him... CS to the core....
If I had been his commander and reviewed the dash cam footage I would have issued reprimands and suspensions for failure to follow protocol and training.... Unless this wasn't his first time.....

So my question would be if you had been in the SUV that drove up on that would you have:
A. plowed straight into that asshole shooting at the cop
B. Stopped SUV and drew your own weapon onto asshole to help Cop.
C. reversed and got out of dodge like in video.

I think I would have gone with A.

Also, if I was in that house I might have had a thought of seeing how much help 30 rounds from my AR would be to the LEO.

Id reverse and get the heck out of dodge

Curious - you ram your car into this guy/his car, how would your insurance handle that?
But who knows, it's one thing to talk about WHAT YOU WOULD DO vs what you'd actually do in the scenario

Also depends on who you have with you (ie: got kids in your car that would be put in danger?)

Im glad he jumped out and shot at him vs. waiting til he got up beside the car. He'd damn sure killed that officer at close range.

That wasn't that boys first rodeo. He had some experience shooting that pistol.

Could have been kids in the SUV.

Or the driver hated cops.

Or they're a pussycat.

Or he had a dog in the car and feared for it's life. :D

A friend of mine, ex-LEO, was coming into his parking lot for work. He spotted someone trying to break into a car. When seen, the perp jumped into a waiting vehicle. My friend engaged in pursuit. While still in the parking lot, he rammed the escape vehicle, which in turn ran into a couple of vehicles parked in the lot. The escape vehicle managed exit the lot and escape. My friend ended up paying over $5000 in damages to the parked vehicles. This was all caught on security video and was quite entertaining. :D

Yes, kids or wife in car and only thought is their protection. Not sure how insurance would handle it but I bet I know one LEO who might vouch for me.

I watched this on Donut Operator's youtube channel and my first couple thoughts were...

"I wish the silver SUV would ram the shooter!"
"What if the silver SUV was carrying, shooter isn't paying him any attention, he could easily take the shooter out"
"Too bad the bystander doesn't have a truck rifle, perfect opportunity to take out that shooter"

...But then I stopped dreaming and couldn't believe the officer took his good ol' time getting to cover, backing away from his car.

For all those talking about action by bystanders, don't forget, there was a girl in the car. She would have probably been seen by the motorist coming the other way. This is a factor as well. Accomplice? Hostage? In the line of fire?

All I was thinking was that if the guy was intent on shooting, he could have been out faster and had the officer while he was still in his seat belt. One aimed pair at the top of the steering wheel and driven off. Or grabbed the dash cam and driven off. Does that video get offloaded somewhere or is it in the cam? Did the officer even report the plate number?

Chances are, I would have gotten the hell out of there too. One, my responsibility is to me and my family. Two, you have little to no idea of what is going on or what your getting involved with. Three, there are questions of liability. Four, the “professionals” with the giant 3’ badge have made it clear they don’t want us mere peons getting involved in their business.

Very good point. Almost forgot about her.

Kids in my car, not going to engage the threat. I'm hauling ass to get them the hell out of there safely, but once they're out of the line of fire, I would consider flanking that asshole.

AR with folding stock for easy access in the front of the car.
Would not get involved since lead was flying but if the officer was down that may change things.

Most I've seen either store on the officer's laptop or to a hardmounted drive in the car, usually trunk. I don't recall if ours automaticallyupload from there, I believe they do, but pretty sure it's not a constant stream.
