Police kills man’s dog then make him cut off it’s head...cuz Rabies

Yeah I can't get behind this one to much stupid. The guy even said I understand why they shot the dog. I get why they didn't want to pay for the vet but the officers should have made sure there were gloves and other precautions taken. Also isn't there a time limit on that testing and if so how long after? No if you had one person exposed you have at minimum one other exposed as well.

Not very professional at all. But, I'm guessing that Big Boy is a pit owned by a dumbass that doesn't get his dog vaccinated and lets it run loose to bite people. It probably wasn't neutered either.

I picture this guy wearing a shirt that has “Big Boy” airbrushed on it

Yeah I guess I would've gone to jail that day. No way in hell they're gonna force me to cut my dogs head off after they shoot him. What's next, they shoot a family member and then ask me to perform the autopsy?

My wife has been following the story. He was up to date on his shots and rabies according to a new article in the area.

The action of Mr. Bowtie needs to be thrown under the buss and ran over a few times. Getting in the guys face, putting hands on him..jesus.

Service revolver? Dang I didn't know any LE was still using a revolver.

If I were the cop I'd have shot the dog too. Asking to behead the dog is out of line. Also telling me how I'll talk to anyone is not ok. I would have simply told him to FO.

Why were the po po at his house / property to begin with?

As I've said before, I don't care how big your badge is, stay off my property unless your invited. I do not recognize the government as having such authority.

Cause his dog was hurting people? If your dog bites a person not on your property, a cop comes to help her and the cop gets bit you don't expect a visit? Possibly a lawsuit?

BTDT, if your dog bites someone, shots or no shots, and you have it put down they want to test the head. Sucks.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any cause given in the article.

My plan is to move out to my rural property in the not too distant future. Believe me, the way thing will be arranged, my dogs getting out and biting won't be an issue nor would uninvited guests, even of the government persuasion, getting on the property.

Now if you go on someone else's property uninvited and get bit by their dog, that's a different matter. You get what you deserve at that point, regardless of who you are.

They will make you pay for the dog to be quarantined at the vet to make sure it doesn't show signs of rabies. I think they would do this before they put it down in most cases, but I don't have any personal experience with this. I worked at an animal hospital while in college and dogs came in all the time for quarantine, but we never put one down that I can recall.

That is true, however in this case the dog had already been shot and killed by the deputy so the only recourse for testing was to test the brain tissue. Now making the owner decapitate the dog was a bit much, but testing the brain became necessary once the dog died.

Rabies is an unusual disease. There is no cure, but the vaccine can be given after exposure. The reason for that is that the disease doesn't travel through the blood but through the nervous system itself. It infects the nerves nearest the site of the bite and then slowly progresses back to the brain. That's why you can vaccinate post-exposure and prevent death.

FWIW I was bitten several years ago by a pit. It was my in-law's tenant's dog that they had in violation of the lease. My father in law and i showed up to pick up an old refrigerator to dispose of it and the dog was in a crate/cage outside. The dog disintegrated that cage and was on my thigh before I could escape or draw. The owner pulled the dog off before I could clear my holster or it would have been dead. It was quarantined and they pulled vaccination records. It was vaccinated just not very well socialized. Luckily I didn't have to have shots...... I hear they are quite painful.

Did the renters at least leave without going to court?

Ours was head shy and aggressive. We could deal with it until we had a newborn in the house. It was tough but I was not taking any chances that it would bite our new daughter. Dog had to go. Bitting my buddy was the last straw.

Wait I just thought about this a different way.

Ok so if the people refused to allow it taken to vet because they refuse to pay the cost they then voluntarily was forced to cut its head off themselves. Because one way or the other it was ordered tested and was ultimately their choice. So after thinking about this I don't feel sorry for them at all and think if they had kept big boy in a proper enclosure he might still be alive.

Moral of this story (from personal experience) is to have your animal under control AND carry a record of shots from your vet.
When Bailey was about 2 years old she bit a lady that put her hand through a partially lowered window of my Tahoe "to pet the pretty dog" of which Bailey did as she was taught, she bit the hand that was invading her space. I called the cops, cops showed up in force (3 of them) and wanted to take Bailey to animal control. As I politely told the cop, that ain't happening. I produced her vet paperwork and told them that was as close as they were getting. After some "high level" consultation between them they decided that it was best if Bailey stayed in my custody.
The lady admitted that she had stuck her hand into the truck and one of the cops called her stupid to which she admitted. Nothing else was ever heard from the cops or the lady and Bailey slept in her bed that night.
I always carry the most current vet record of Lucy's health and all shots, treatments, etc. are noted. Hard to argue with proof....

Same way here, but I severely doubt this guy treated that dog like a family member.

You are correct Sir, but until we get about 100 million more people with that point of view the .gov's are just going to trample people.
