Porche 919 evo sets new track record at Nurburgring

The top speed I saw was right around 370. That's only 230mph.

Question - what is the 'boost' for? Its not turbo boost, is it charging the electric?

Hybrid. So it’s gas and electric.
What I figured, I guess, somehow, even under acceleration it's charging the batteries.

I know that some cars, even race, have systems that 'capture' the braking energy and convert it to electricity. But this one isnt like that, as the 'boost' is lit up under acceleration, but not the full time of it. Odd, but whatever, it freaking works!

From what I’ve read, the front wheels are the electric drive and rears are gas. Instant torque during acceleration while turbo gas engine is spooling up. Great sounds in that video. That transmission is FAST!

That explains a lot

Pretty zippy. I didn't think anything on 4 wheels could be F1 cars in the twistys. Impressive.

I think BMW F1 car did a fun exhibition lap faster than this.

Not taking away from this, it’s totally awesome. But F1 cars are from another level.

Yes they are, but apparently so is this thing.

Our first clue as to the sheer speed in the 919 Evo came in April. Porsche took it to the Belgian track of Spa-Francorchamps, where driver Neel Jani drove it around in 1:41.770. That's 12 seconds faster than the 919 Hybrid's best time, and almost 8/10ths of a second faster than the current F1 lap record at the track.

That damn thing is getting down. The concentration at that speed is crazy. One brain fart and there's big problems, lol.

After watching the video I don’t think its the drivers first rodeo on this track! He was moving but be a bad day to forget where you are on the track.

I was wondering the same thing - how many hundreds of times he had driven that track... that is definitely a case where “know it like the back of you hand” is just table stakes.

Edit: but I still think if they set one up for one lap on this track with a driver like this it would beat it handily.
You are probably right, but until they do...

That is what impressed me the most. The level of focus and concentration it takes to run a track like that, at speeds like that, even if he does know it like the back of his hand is incredible.

That time is 51sec faster than the previous record.......that's insane!

Great driver (didn’t look to me like he was pushing the limits) and electric == loads of instant torque when needed the most.

There are some pretty funny crash compilations from open track days. It is amazing the stupid stuff people think the can do. A guy in a "stanced" BMW didn't level his suspension first to get full contact patch. Wicked Shawkah that he lost it.

I watched a couple of those too. Seemed like Beemers were the majority of mishaps but maybe that because there are so many over there.

I was surprised at what people hopped out of their cars and walked or ran away afterward. Good structural safety and a LOT of adrenaline I bet!

Drivers often play realistic racing games like Forza while traveling. Drag racers have a small light tree to hone their reaction times (like a shot counter) while traveling.

I can say that after 6 laps I was mentally drained, like someone said before - knowing where you are, whats coming up next etc.

Its a big track, exacerbated with hundreds of other vehicles on track at the same time youre keeping track of around you.

I watched this video again...I N S A N E. The speed is just nuts, and those times will drop even more as the years go by.

Its a lot like Isle of Man: most of the really fast people drive/ride it A LOT. Or, even worked at the track for a while.

There were a couple of areas he could have stood on it a little harder, and I only heard the rev limiter once......
As far as the track, it's like going to the bathroom in the dark in the middle of the night, you either KNOW where everything is or Little Piggy gets hurt, BAD.....

This is what a modern interpretation of the CAN-AM would look like; they were faster than contemporary Formula One every year it ran.

Yep, IOM is insane also, even more so to me, as on a bike, you literally have no room for error. I know a couple guys who do the IOM and all have told me it takes years to get at the pointy end over there.

Check it out on Netflix, hypercar. They have a speed limit on the track now. So top speed wont make much difference, it's about acceleration and speed in the turns.

Everything I see says the goofy sectional speed limit thing was only in place for around a year after a spectator was killed in a GT3 race. It was lifted in 2016. Start finish is always a speed limited zone while it is a public roadway and not a race track.

Interesting video I saw posted at racer.com

Too dangerous.

Hit the wall or lose control...it's over.

In a modern race car, no way. Cars crash on that track every year during races.
Hell, I witnessed a street car that crashed on that track, driver standing next to his car...from the firewall forward of that Supra was no longer attached.

The electric cars remind me of my slot car racing days. The first generation slots (the inline type) were fast but not all that stable and then one day we discovered "angle drive". They whined like a banshee but were much more stable in turns and the tire compounds were beginning to improve so speeds were significantly faster. In scale speeds we were turning very close to the F1 cars of the day.
If you misjudged a corner you could fly off the track and disintegrate just like the real cars. What you had after that was "parts" if you were lucky. The hand controllers had become much more sophisticated and sensitive and it suddenly became easier to wipe out a 125.00 car. God, I miss those days, I can still smell the "Tiger's Milk" we put on the tires to improve grip.....
