Post your 2018 Gardens!

I'll pics later. I tilled my dirt last weekend. Got 3 blueberry bushes to plant this week, beans in the ground, then it's on at month's end.

My 2 spots are tilled. Picked up a scoop of chicken litter for the gardens and worked it in about 2 weeks ago. One raised bed has been giving is Kale for about a month. Planted Zucchini, beans, more kale, and butternut squash. My tomatoes are up and coming along nicely but not in the ground yet. Had a holster customer bring me some containers so my raised bed space will be expanding this year.

I've got to figure out how to post pics from my phone, but here's a list of what my kids and I have done so far.

I've got a small apple orchard with 13 trees. Each tree is a different type . Most are heirloom "old southern" varieties.
We've tended them, basic maintenance. Fertilized and limited pruning.
Varieties: King David, Aunt Rachel, Carolina June, Gala, Virginia Gold, Hunge, Mammoth Black twig, Terry Winter, Stayman Winesap, Winesap, Dixie Red Delight, Honey Crisp, Liberty

I've got commercial apple root stock in pots that I am trying to propagate, and three apple grafts that I hope take.

We made a cold frame this fall and started all of our bedding plants in there. They are doing well.

We've bottom plowed and disked three small garden spots and applied quite a bit of compost, and turned it in.

We planted Pontiac (red) potatoes, and Yukon Gold (yellow) potatoes.

We planted onions.

This weekend I plan to get in the corn, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc

We have 4 grapevines that we pruned. We left some long runners and put them through pots to root, so that we can add more vines to the property. Varieties: Noble, Fry, Tara, and Supreme.

I've bought two plumb trees that we need to set out, and 9 blueberry bushes to add the 5 that we already had.

I've potted up 5 cuttings from some thornless blackberries to get them to root.

I transplanted a fig tree from my father's house to our land.

We've sold the pine timber from the property and I am in the process of getting the stumps cleared and the the property graded. I plan to plant around 20 pecan trees this next fall/winter.

across the property I am replacing areas of cut pines with oak seedlings and plan to have a small grove of black walnuts as well.

There are never ending chores around here. But I love it!

Funny! I grew up on a small farm and hated it. Couldn't wait to get away. I went to college. Go married. Was renting a little house and got sooooooo bored.

Something was missing. I asked the landlord if I could plant some tomatoes near the patio. He said yes.
The next year I asked if I could put in a little garden in another place on the property. He said yes.
The next year I asked if I could clear a bit larger area, and remove some brush and a small tree or two. He said yes.

15 years later and my wife and own 17 acres, but have access to another 5 that we have an agreement to buy.
I have a 1963 Farmall 140 with a ton of attachments and accessories that I got by swapping an antique car for.

Sometimes I feel like it has gotten out of control, but I enjoy it so much. I can't stand sitting on the couch.
I have three children ages 5,9, & 11. They are big helps. Sometimes reluctant, but they do help.

I keep telling them, "just think, when you are my age, and bringing your children here to pick grapes, apples, etc; you'll be able to tell them that you helped your daddy plant these when you were their age."

If you like doing something, it's not so much work. I am a high school teacher and come home exhausted some days and can't figure out why. When I am tired after spending the day working on our land, I know why I'm tired. I can sleep better being able to see how productive we were.

It's a labor of love. All of our stuff is young. 3 years or less, but the future potential is exciting for me.

I tore apart the boxes from where they were. And decided that last years garden was just to touch too big for us.
Some I moved them to this spot and will buy good soil to fill them. Used the dirt out of th ground and add to it last year, the weeds were too much.

Here's 2 blueberries and a raspberry starting to come back... They need some help.

Anybody know what kind of trees these are ?

Yeah, both dogwoods. Good looking trees.

I've been looking into building my soil for my new boxes. Best idea seems to be to mix it up, several types of compost, some potting soil, local soil if you have it, and going to add some Coconut coir to it to hold water. Probably layer in some stuff for minerals too.

So far ours is just tomato seedlings under a grow bulb in the mud room. Perfect weekend to get some serious work done and I’m laid up with the flumoniaanalrectumitis

Looks awesome!

Decided to put up a Corn field this year. Figured I open up the ground ahead of this rain that's coming.
So I just got done running the tiller thru the area I had the boxes at last year. May have to add a little soil builder, but not much.

Next weekend is going to be a hard working one...

Looks like you have a beautiful yard, and the landscaping looks clean and sharp. I wouldn't dare show mine. If I can't fix it with roundup, the lawn mower or a bush hog, I don't do it. My wife is NOT a gardener, flowers or otherwise. The entire out of doors is my domain.
I love the dogwoods. My wife and I were discussing putting dogwoods down out our driveway. I have just got to find a nursery that carries dog woods. Our driveway is 116 yards long, so I'm going to need a few.

I've got all summer to find them though. I plan on putting them in while dormant along with the pecans next winter.

@nc_reb If you find a good supplier of Dogwoods, would you post it here? Thanks

Took some wicking containers apart and built a larger bed. Filled up the small bed too.

Veg, plants / seeds and flowers are bought.
Took ride down to Sanford - Big Bloomers garden nursery. What a bunch of Liberial kooks walking around that place. Some real hippy dippy ones o_O

Anyway, dirt is a little wet but will be planting in earnest tomorrow morning. :)

Wife already planted her portulaca

Couple bags of fertilizer, a scoop or two of mulch and I'm good to go.

The small pistol range is out of the photo, on the left. :)

Pulled up the kale. Amended the bed with horse and chicken manure and a bag of potting soil. Wanted to loosen up the topsoil we put in it originally. Added bone meal and azorite as well. Then planted our cucumbers. Filled in the beans where the didn’t take. And filled another box to plant what was left of the peppers.

Going to Broadwells next weekend, maybe. Heard lots a,bout them.
There's another large nursery next door.
If you need fertilizer or chemicals, go a couple more miles to Watkins Farm Service, they have better options, more knowledge and pricing than anywhere else I've seen.

Finally finished planting. 4 days of hell with the 18" Cub Cadet. I'm getting too old for this. Anyone have a good place to place pictures for posting?

Things are going gang busters... this rain is helping and hurting.
Mostly I have to kill all the basil, they have Downey mildew from the humidity and rain.

Anybody ever lost tomatoes to too much rain? I lost 6 this week. After transplanting them I had only lost one out of about 36-40. Can't remember exactly. Wife checked yesterday and we have 6 dead. The rest are doing great and we did them all the same in regards to compost, planting, and bone meal. Just odd. Although with the cold temps they really never seemed to get nice and strong. When we translated them they were smaller than I would have liked. Looks like I'll be seeding some more this week and have a more staggered harvest. Not the worst thing, but it's annoying.

The rest of the garden is doing will. Been eating Kale for a while, beans are flowering, and I need to pick a couple banana peppers already.
