quote:
White potatoes, which come in various colors, are classified as “starchy vegetables.”
But the committee could uproot potatoes from the vegetable bin and toss them in with a broader category of rice,
other grains and carbohydrates as the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services weigh updates to national diet guidelines for 2025.

I still remember being poor and in college in the 90s and saying something to my mother about potatoes not being good for you, so this isn’t new.

Anyway, her response was: they still pack a lot of nutrition, which I believe is true especially if you eat the skins (we do).

There are three and only three parts to a plant; roots, stems, and leaves. All structures are derived from one or more of these three parts. We eat all three parts of plants at one time or another. I would suggest that all parts of a plant that we eat should be considered to be vegetables since they are from vegetation. I do not really care what some government people want to call it as long as they do not try to make me eat brussel sprouts.

I wonder if they say mushrooms are vegetables? Mushrooms are no longer considered to be plants.

Brussel sprouts are good, IF cooked correctly. Oven roasted is best. Boiled? might as well eat a slimy eyeball.

Mushrooms. Aren’t vegetables, they’re fungus. Like toe jam.

Yeah some lawmaker is pushing this to fulfill some tick box for a big payout from some government agency I'm sure. It's almost like they're corrupt or something.

Yep.

Look into the history of tomatoes. Up until 1893, tomatoes were considered a fruit, as botanically they most certainly are. However, this went all the way up to the Supreme Court, and not because people were simply arguing over whether a tomato was a fruit or a vegetable.

No, they were arguing over this because the New York Port Authority wanted to tax them at the import tax rate of 10% for vegetables. But fruit (at least at that time) wasn't taxed at all.

The Supreme Court argument came down to science(fruit) vs. every day life (which treated them as vegetables in common usage). The court said that while they WERE fruit, they were actually TREATED just like any other vegetable when prepared for meals. So for customs law, tomatoes were henceforth treated as vegetables and taxed accordingly.

I'm betting there's a monetary bottom line with this on potatoes, somewhere, just like there was for tomatoes.

I would be willing to bet the vast majority in the US doesn’t go by the guidelines or even know what they are. Don’t believe me, find the first car you see with a planet fitness sticker on it and take a look at the driver.

Nobody's saying potatoes are going to be called fruit. The OP said they're going to be lumped into a broader category with rice and other grains, largely due to their carbohydrate content "as the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services weigh updates to national diet guidelines for 2025".

Personally, I think they're over thinking the whole shebang. People should ALREADY KNOW they're chock full of carbohydrates. I mean, I can remember this from at least as far back as the '70s. Lumping them in with rice and grains isn't going to do anything for people who don't give a rats @$$ about eating a balanced diet in reasonable portions anyway.

And besides...lumping them in with grains would be misleading as to the fiber and nutrient content as compared to all the different grains.

Aha!

So they're to be re-labeled evil carbs so the upcoming Dietary Governance Broad can save us from global warmcooling stormic increase by tracking and curtailing our carbo footprint.

It's all a crock anyhow since botanical designations take a backseat to some half-assed culinary/caloric hogwash from the same organization that sold out hard enough to tell us sugar was safer than animal fat.

Mushrooms are actually the fungus' genitals.

If you think about it, a lot of food, especially with plants is its genitals.
And the beautiful sounds and scents of nature are usually the equivalent of "HEEEYYYYYY! WHO WANTS TO BAAAANNNNNGGGGG?"

since we are "there" already....when you get a face full of pollen...what did you actually get?

Pollen is a powdery substance produced by most types of flowers of seed plants for the purpose of sexual reproduction.
It consists of pollen grains (highly reduced microgametophytes), which produce male gametes (SPERM cells).
