If anyone uses these, like I do, the original military pour spouts are expensive. A while back I bought one on amazon, that a guy was making out of PVC, for $26 (link: https://www.amazon.com/Scepter-Mili...&sprefix=military+gas+can+&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 )

It works but it’s only a 1/2 inch hose so slow to pour with. Once I had his I saw how easy they are to make. So here’s how to make one for under $10 (assuming you have pvc glue and Teflon tape on hand and can find the hose sold by the foot).

Here’s what you’ll need. A 2 inch slip to thread adaptor.

A 2 inch to 3/4 Spigot to thread bushing

A 1 inch to 3/4 inch hose reducer coupling (I couldn’t find a 1 inch to 1 inch.)

Edit: Ok I just realized I took a picture of the box next to the one you need. That's a hose to hose adapter and what you need is threaded to hose. Roughly the same price though.

1 foot of 3/4 inch reinforced vinyl tubing. The Lowe’s I went to only had it in a 10 ft roll. I was planning to make a couple of them so no big deal.

Teflon tape will work but I had some gasoila thread sealant at the shop which is better for this application.

Glue the PVC together and then thread in the hose adaptor.

Squirt some wd40 into the hose and slide it on and voila.

This is the new one I made next to the one I got off of amazon. The 3/4 inch hose should pour a lot faster.

Nice spout!

5-gal Mil gas can - is the inside of the can's mouth threaded, or is the threaded PVC just the right diameter for the mouth - i.e. does it leak around the threaded adapter when pouring? Many of the spouts I've used on other gas cans seep or leak a little, so no surprise if it does. Just wondered how liquid-tight it is.

The inside of the can is also threaded. You do get a very small amount of leakage around the spout but it’s drips. Can’t be helped without using Teflon tape on the spout threads but then it’d be a PITA to put on and take off.

Thanks. I imagine it's no worse than many/any other pour spout set up.

Lol. Far better than the new government mandated spill proof crap on gas cans.

It’s a drop about every 5 seconds. But that was with the old spout. The 3/4 inch line may allow it to flow fast enough not to leak or not much.

I’ll try it out this weekend and post the result.

Mine never leaked on any of the cans I had. @MacEntyre has it now, maybe post a pic and see if its different?

We used steel reinforced clear hose on the race jugs, the stuff will not kink and stays pliable a lot longer than the fabric reinforced hose.

I wonder what kind of hose Danica preferred when she was racing Indycar?:D:D

Are the treads on the metal cans the same as the plastic?
IIRC the metal cans are NOT threaded on the inside, only the plastic cans are. The older metal USGI Donkey Dicks had clamp with washer that sealed the adaptor. It will work on the newer cans too. Diameter of the metal hose was for the wider diesel fuel points. There's a newer black plastic USGI one that screws into the can. Both will require a funnel if your going to fuel up a unleaded vehicle. When we used to fuel up our HMMVEEs in the desert, secure the Donkey Dick to the fuel can and open the fuel port. Insert nozzle and turn and hold can upside down against the vehicle till can was empty. Didn't spill hardly any.

Ok. I bought a piece of sheet gasket (cork). I marked it and cut it and then attached it to the base of the screw portion with some silicone gasket maker.

Works like a charm. Absolutely zero leaks and pours about 10 times faster than the old one. I think I emptied a 5 gallon can in about 45 seconds.

This is great info. I've been replacing the spouts on my civilian cans and they just keep breaking. I'm ready for a new gas can set up. Where can one get these military gas cans?
