I've had a lawn service for years but will be doing it myself this year due to financial constraints.
Anyone have a particular crab grass pre-emergent to recommend?

Lawn is Bermuda not fescue.

There is a strip of my yard that has never been weed free, it looks exactly like crab grass to me but after calling the lawn service out on the fact they'd been treating for several seasons and it was still there they weaseled on about some other species. I hope I haven't already missed the window, I'm tired of this stuff in my otherwise nice looking yard.

Not so sure about a crab grass preventative, but I've been using corn gluten fertilizer with good results for several years. It acts a lot like Preen. You want to put it down when the forsythia is blooming, so it will be time soon.

My yard thinks it's spring already - everything is budding and sprouting. You may already be too late with the pre-emergent this year.

My yard is currently about 75% wild clover groupings and 25% dead wild bermuda..
Exactly the same as mine except I have another 5% of onions.

I put down some of the Scotts with Halts pre last weekend. Pricey but everyone seems to have good results with it.

I'm not too sure about Bermuda but for my Fescue lawn I really like Dimension, secondarily Baricade. For spot treatments I use 2-4D and Quinclorac.

I find "the lawn care nut" on YouTube to be very educational.

Yes, might be too late for preemergent here in Wake Forest too... going to do it tonight anyway.

What about fertilizer for Bermuda? What and when on that? Background info, I have brownest, weediest yard in neighborhood....

Too late again here. I swore I would get a jump on it this year too. But this 70 degree crap has made stuff take off. Oh well, my zoysia does a decent job of taking over in a few months anyway.

Was it really that long ago that I had to plow my driveway???????

Everyone saying it's too late, this is why I like Dimension (Dithiopyr). It has mild post emergent properties as well giving you and extra 4-6wk window. This is perfect for the crazy weather we've had this year.

As some of you know we had our septic done last year; our entire back yard torn to hell and back. The only really green patches are clover and weeds, now my wife wants to get rid of all of that so it doesn't invade the grass we planted. I told her I don't care, I want green: weeds, clover, onion, grass...makes no nevermind to me.

Weeds will survive any drought.

Crabgrass doesn’t germinate based on air temperatures. It’s all about soil temperatures. You’re definitely not too late to apply it. Since you have warm season grass apply a 0-0-7 w/Dimension as soon as you can. Wait until April and throw the nitrogen to it!

Where does one get these? 2-4D I recognize from working on farms but no idea where to get it in CLT.
Most often I buy product blends from HD, you just have to read the labels to see what each mfg puts in each product and do a little research to know which combos will do the best for what you're trying to treat. I also found that True Value in Concord, by 601 & 73, has a decent selection of pro grade herbicides. I just ordered my Dithiopyr off Amazon.

Pre-emergent??? I cut the grass then sprayed a weed and feed around the lawn today. I didn't see value to pre-emergent when I already have so many weeds including crab grass!!! I still may hit it with some in a few weeks, but I'm getting aggressive with the weeds immediately!

go to a Green Resource or Lesco and get either fertlizer with demension or get demension without fertilizer. if it is .15 demension you have to do it twice

I never had any results from pre-emergents. I wait and mix heavier with 2-4D. I have seeded and seeded and seeded and limed and limed and fertilized until 1/3 acre was in the thousands per year. It looks awesome for half a year.

Hears the thing I found about lawns. I get a lush green grass with buckets full of money spent then the grubs come from every neighbor yard to munch. Then all the moles come to feast on them and tunnel like mad. It’s been a no win situation.

Bermuda is not a desirable grass but it chokes most weeds out because of its density. It can be over seeded in fall and winter with rye to green it up. It will live thru droughts and grows less tall extending mow intervals. I plan to lay it down next and save my money over the next couple decades.

"Bermuda is not a desirable grass"

I totally agree. It's great for a golf course or a ball field but I don't like it for a lawn.

I'm trying to revive/salvage my fescue... However, I'm battling weeds and Bermuda runners from my neighbor who does nothing with her lawn. Unfortunate, I'm losing the fight...

I feel your pain but just be prepared to spend the money or effort trying to keep the bermuda from taking over flower beds or drives. Its tough and persistant stuff that will grow threw asphalt.

I went with Dithiopyr but didn't get enough for the whole yard. Will have to go back for more.
If you buy the soluble form, it's only $64 shipped on Amazon for 60k sqft coverage. All you need is a sprayer, I did my 4300sqft yard with a simple $5 1 gallon sprayer, 1k sqft at a time. Conveniently for me, it began raining as I was finishing up, so it was naturally watered in. Far more economical than buying the bags of Lesco at HD.

Ok, so lawn is a weedy mess with a dozen different kinds including what looks like going crabgrass even though I laid down preemergent.

So, doused it in some Gordon’s trimec I had left. It’s gone so more trimec or get Amine 2,4,D?

Spray next couple weeks and pull the big ones then cut it super low and start fertilizing with nitrogen?

One look at my lawn will confirm I know nothing about weed control. What I can contribute is that I use Urea to feed nitrogen. It is about as high in nitrogen as I've found so it goes a long way. You have to be very careful not to burn the greenery (I use it on shrubs too) and I water thoroughly after application.

I have the same problem, Turflon Ester takes care of the Bermuda.

Have you looked into nematodes to kill grubs?

If you're laying sod (or plugging) look into Zoysia or there's a newer Bermuda that's supposed to be very nice http://www.supersod.com/sod/bermuda-sod/tiftuf-bermuda.html .
I walked at the sod farm, I chose Zoysia due to the lower maintenance and less growing into everything else.
I just walked in from cutting, then planting 190 plugs.
