Wide spread, famine level of food hardship is something that hasn't been experienced in this part of the world in about 100 years. You would likely have to go back to my (deceased) great grandparents generation to find someone who experienced it. Technology has made immense progress in the amount of food that is and can be produced, but corporate-agriculture also comes with a price. All this is to say that a famine level event could happen again, and here.
You are wise to have stores for more than years worth of food; at least two, preferably three and the more self reliant you can make yourself the better. At a minimum you should try to focus on working with local farmers as suppliers as that relationship could be important in the future.
