PSA AK-V First Shots & Thoughts

Well, I had a few beers tonight and couldn’t help myself...got one on the way, and a Primary Arms MicroDot, and an Inforce WML with offset MLOK mount too.

I don't think you'll regret it. Unless you didn't pick up a few extra mags to go along with it.

If anyone in S.C. wants one, there’s a guy on armslist in columbia selling a new one in black MOE with 4 mags and an SBA3 brace for $775... I wish I hadn’t looked

You should jump on that if he's close. That's at least $150 less than you'd pay new if you figure tax, FFL and shipping.

I’m gonna grab a scorpion mag and a Magpul Pmag so I can try out all three and see which I prefer then I’ll just order a few of whatever that is.

What do y’all prefer for mags?

PSA mags: https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-ak-v-9x19mm-35-round-u9-patterned-magazine-5165448274.html. I have a small pile of these now, but only rotate through the same five mags. No issues yet, but they haven't been abused by any means.

They are regularly, if not always on some sort of "sale," but I usually snag a handful when PSA offers its semi-regular free-shipping-on-five deal. Nowadays, they also have smoked and clear AK-V mags, as well as other colors (plum, FDE, OD, etc.), and a 15-round mag extension.

Or, you can always jungle-style clamp a couple of these bad boys together for ultimate range trollage:

Awesome, I’ll prob end up picking up a bunch of their mags, I was just curious how they compared to CZ mags or the Magpul Pmags.

@Derek8404 I don't own any CZ or Magpul Scorpion mags for this thing, but I'd like to hear how they work once you get yours.

FYI - pretty sure the Magpuls are not steel reinforced (the PSA AK-V are), if that matters at all to you.

I’ll let ya know how they work if I get any. Sounds like the PSA mags are better made that the Magpulls so I prob won’t get any of those.

On @IUHoosier429's advice I added a Burris FastFire 3 and I'm impressed with the results. And @BigWaylon the SplitFix makes a big difference.

Few shots to dial it in then it was just making little holes into big holes. 20yds. Got a little lazy on the right white triangle and probably needs to come down one more click but I'll take it.

Nice shooting, @JohnnyTyler! Glad you're enjoying the FF3 as well.

Anyone here experimented with any other muzzle devices? I've considered a legit Russian Vityaz or old Bizon brake and a few others, but the PSA brake works nicely and I think it looks great.

These AK-Vs are 100% compatible with CZ Scorpion mags, right? So if you have a bunch of those mags they'll work in the AK-V (and vice versa for the mag that comes with the AK-V?)

Also, with the optic mounting to the top cover, how is RTZ when you remove and replace the top cover?

Asking for a friend. :D

yes the mags are compatible with both the Scorpion and AK-V. As far as the RTZ, I have heard that it maintains the zero pretty well. I mounted mine as far forward as I could to help mitigate this even more, but I’m about to head to the range and put some rounds through it for the first time. I’ll get the optic zeroed and open and close the cover a bunch of times and let you know how it goes in a few hrs when I get back

Just missing a SplitFix. :D

If PSA doesn’t restock AR-45s soon, I might have to buy one of these instead.

It is awfully tempting over the Ar9 compatibility hassles. I just find it hard to trust ak top cover optics mounts

I wish I had funds for something like that, I really miss the PCC I once had, mind was a Beretta CX4.

@Vyntage So just got back from the range and putting a few hundred rounds through the AK-V. I like this thing a lot, very fun to shoot. I started off getting the dot zeroed at 25yds and then periodically throughout the range session I would open and slam shut the top cover several time and then re confirm zero. Didn’t have a single issue with it, and the rounds kept hitting right where I wanted them too. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite guns I’ve ever owned.

I really hate to sound like an unadulterated fanboy here, but I've had no issues keeping my red dot zeroed. Like @Derek8404 I've messed around opening and closing the dust cover several times, and it locks up and stays tighter than any of my other AK variants minus my Galil ACE (which pretty much takes a flathead screwdriver to push in the dust cover button). The FastFire3 has lived on this AK-V pretty much as long as I've had the gun, and the only time I had to adjust the dot was during those first few practice shots chronicled in the first post of this thread.

PSA has had some relatively major, well-documented issues throughout its AK growth, but this little thing is a damn fine gun and I'm fast approaching "trust my life" status with it. FWIW.

Good to know, thanks.

You all are killing me! I still need to file my form 1 and get an optic for my Zenith, which is likely the same costs as an AK-V. Really wanting the AK-V though...

Plus I think it was @BigWaylon that said someone was coming out with an AR9 lower that takes Scorpion mags too, so that'd be 3 guns I had taking the same mags!

looks like you might not have to wait too long for this.

What's the Split Fix?
If you wanna see one in person, swing by the house. Or I’ll stop by yours one day. I just got my 5th one.

Just got mine used. Thinking about replacing the muzzle brake with the Kak micro flash can. Any thoughts?

I'm still rocking the stock brake because it works fine and looks good to me. If you go the flash can route, I'd love to see a photo of how it looks.

Another 200 rounds of Freedom Munitions 115-grain pills through mine tonight. Round count is right at 1,400. Still haven't cleaned it. Still zero malfunctions. Disassembled when I got home and no visible deformation of any of the internals.
