One, i believe the guns were designed to run steel case ammo, so gas/timing may be part of the design parameters to accommodate this. I also believe the case design is more tapered and less susceptible to fouling. I haven't studied it to great detail. But, I know the steel obturation rate of steel case is a factor in function based on past experiences.
I believe you are on the right track. The 7.62 x 39 case is tapered more than .223/5.56.

.223/5.56 is almost straight walled.

For reference,
The HK MP5 has a fluted chamber to insure extraction of the 9mm straight walled brass case.

I quote, "non chrome lined barrels tend to have more issues with steel casings sticking" which I found interesting.
It is interesting, because barrels that are destined to be chrome lined have to have larger barrel bores and chambers to accomodate the chrome lining and maintain tolerance. If a "regular sized" barrel was chrome lined, the barrel bore and chamber could be .003" to .006" ( or more ) undersized.

Friend had an HK-91 with a fluted chamber that left the 7.62x51 brass looking funky. It was fun to shoot though.

All of the Norinco ammo was copper washed steel case. It was fantastic!!
( and cheap back in the early 90's )

You're absolutely right.

I remember bright yellow, silver and green boxes, and I don't know if there was any actual difference. $2.10 a box at the time.

Silver Box was " regular " ammo

Yello Box was " armor piercing" ammo. It had a steel slug inside the jacketed lead core of the projectile.

I never shot any green box Norinco. I never came across any, but shot cases upon cases upon cases of the silver and yellow box through an SKS with a Dragunov Scope mounted to it. Zero issues with the ammo.

Still got some silver box... circa 1995.

No laquer ( or polymer ) coating on these. The primer is sealed with the red primer sealant.

5.56 Nato.
Which were you shooting:
Steel case 5.56 ammo?
or
Steel Case .223 ammo?

( In your case, it probably doesn't matter )

Did they say what type of ammo they ran to test it?

You shoot any brass through the gun prior to shooting the steel cased ammo?

I still have some boxes of Norinco stuff (and an unopened spam can ... can't recall the nomenclature). Not sure I know where to begin to look though. The spam can came with an early Clayco Sports preban gun I bought 2nd hand in 1994 I believe.

I'll look for the green box stuff.

That copper washed 7.62x39 used to cost me $29.99 per 1000 back in the day, I miss those days! It was horribly corrosive so you had to stay on top cleaning after every range session, but it was worth it!

It was 223 and we had not shot anything else through it on THAT range session. We did shoot that rifle once or twice before, about 40 brass each time.

What about the 5.45x39 the Russkis switched to? They did not have any issues with that either.

I don't have any first hand experience with that round, but I will look up the case specs today and compare to 7.62 x 39 and .223/5.56
