“Here is a look at our Initial Production Version of the PSAK in 5.56! It will be available in about a week, with numerous other versions to follow. Keep an eye on the website!”

Been waiting on these.
And yeah, I really dont mind the AR mags…as long as all works as intended.

Is it better to have an AR in 7.62x39 or an AK in 5.56x45?

Makes more sense to me to go with the harder hitting bullet in the more ergonomic rifle, or to stick with what works with the original design of each rifle. But this will be cool when the free world runs out of Russian 7.62x39

There are already a vast number of proven, well-designed 5.56 AK's out there. Why would you want this? Maybe PSA will get it right by the Gen5....but probably not.

If the purpose is to be able to use AR mags, then you're getting into the AK at the wrong time in an effort to save a couple hundred bucks on new mags.

My advice, get a Yugo M85 or ZPAP M90 if you really want a 5.56 AK; an SLR-106 if you have the cash, or a Galil Ace if you want the new school Gucci.

Otherwise, stick to ARs.

Edit: Also the new WBP 5.56 Jack.

I'd add a Polish Beryl to that list, if you're lucky enough to snag one for the two seconds they are in stock at any given time.

Agreed.

The new 5.56 Beryl Pistol is pretty slick except for that stupid optic mount...unfortunately for the cost + what you need to buy for a brace, maybe an Attero optic mount, mags, you're looking at the cost of a factory DD pistol.

The price just doesn't justify it for me. I love my AKs, but anything decent is just insanely expensive anymore. It's too easy and cheap to build an AR pistol.

Yea no. There are plenty of reliable 5.56 aks mags on the market. Using an AR mag is a huge let down.

They sell cheap AKs to cheap AR people. It's kinda their schtick.

Hey, I wish 'em well. I hope they're good...I'm just not expecting it. Furthermore, 5.56 AKs just really ain't my thing. It's probably the "future" of the AK considering the current situation overseas, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Don't hold your breathe. From what I heard today it's gonna be a while before it's available
Jamin posted this ~90 minutes ago:

The 5.56 AK that takes AR mags is in production. The barrels come back from the coaters Wednesday and we will start assembling the next day.

(It’s worded that way because somebody asked about “5.56 ak that takes ar mags” in the JAKL thread)

Do you own a PSA ?

Do you shoot AKs much ? Maybe AK competitive events or ?
I've trained with them extensively, but no, not any comps.

If I was truly wanting an AK in 5.56 (and I've considered it in the past) I'd either go with the ZPAP M85 and some AC Unity mags, or the Galil Ace. Neither would be price competitive with PSA, but that's not my concern with an AK. Any decent AK from manufacturers with military contracts will cost you more than a mid-level AR right now.

You certainly don't need my permission, I would just advise against a PSA AK.

FWIW I decided to pull the trigger on a $599 Blem GF3 to beat on and see for myself how it works. The reviews online are all over the place from the AKOU torture test to echo chambers of “FPSA”.

I have ran it hard, dirty, mag dumps, mixed mags/ammo, accuracy, etc.

It has been worth every penny and keeps trucking. The one I received can thump.

My PSA AR's have been rock solid. Can't say ssme about their PA10. Long time ago I had a Sile AK and it ran like a sewing machine. PSA had an AK with OD green furniture for $600 the other day. I'm a purist. I want AR with AR controls shooting 223/556 rounds and an AK with AK controls shooting 762x39. I'm 🤪 that way.

I'm curious about BHO functionality. Is there something in the magwell that activates a BHO or is the bolt stopped by the follower directly? If the latter, wont it completely destroy plastic mag followers?
I'd bet it Doesnt have a hold open...and this magwell pattern looks very similar to the M90np's

On my M90np it does not have a bolt hold open. Depending on the follower you sometimes see marks on it.

If it has a sharp back its worse, if it is rounder in profile, it just cams down as the bolt passes through.

I've never had an issue with mags used in my m90 being used in anything else....

It does have bolt hold open…at least according to the vids from SHOT Show 22. Also appears its a BHO catch inside since the bolt stays back on video when the mag is removed, so shouldn't be any worries about the bolt eating up plastic followers.

If so. Thats really cool as long as it is robust enough!

Neat!

I don’t advise against PSA AK’s, at all.

I have a GF3 AKP, Premium AK103, and an AK74 that all run great. 3,000+ rds through my pistol with zero issues, around 1,000 through my 103, and approaching 1,000 through my 74. No abnormal wear (or really any visible wear for that matter), no head spacing issues, no firing pin deformation, and no trunnion or bolt deformation whatsoever. All has been ran with Wolf Polyformance 122gr/60gr and Red Army Standard of the same grain weight. I’ve used all types of different mags: Magpul, Izzy, Circle 10, Circle 21, Bulgarian cheapies, Croatian and Russian steelies, bakelites… they all run.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I’ve had nothing but good experiences with PSA AK’s.

Imports are great, and I have a few also. For the average guy though, PSA is a fine choice.

Just why not let PSA try their hand at this. They do make a lot of decent stuff.
They certainly don't need my permission, nor am I a PSA hater at all. I hope they succeed in their efforts. I'm just not buying it until it's proven and that time has not come yet.

SEND IN THE BETA TESTERS!
It absolutely blows me away how people still line up to buy the newest thing from PSA, when for the last 7 years every single time they release a new product, it's plagued with silly or serious issues.
Seriously guys, if you buy the newest latest thing from PSA, you're asking for trouble.
