I have a semi-long range match next weekend, and since I like to practice a bunch and plan way ahead of time, I'm thinking it might be time to decide which rifle I'm gonna use.

I'm thinking of picking up this .224 Valkyrie upper from PSA. Does anyone have 1st hand experience with their Valkyrie barrels, accuracy, etc?

I think they have a 6.5 twist and that is what you’re going to want if you are running heavy bullets

I run 80-90gr with ease from a 7.5 twist. Don’t believe the hype. I will say I was hesitant at first based on what I read online but Rainier sent me one of theirs to shoot and 500 rounds into it, I’m a believer

@Tim johnnys reloading bench on YouTube had a hell of a time with a PSA 224V barrel and swapped it for a WOA after a couple months and a lot of wasted components

I’m sure there are some people out there having success, but they seem to be 50/50....awfully big chance on an unknown quality versus buying Rainier, JP, WOA, etc off the bat

Thats good to hear. Everything ive read has been bad or so so accuracy from the 1/7 and 1/8 twists. Only reason I have jumped the train. Wanting to bad, seems like a sweet round

I have a ar with a bison armory 20 inch heavy ss with 1/6.5 twist. Shoots factory 90gr match king ammo to less than a inch at 100yds.

I have learned it's better to spent extra $$ on a good name brand barrel when wanting small groups.

Bison Armory is good stuff. I have one of their 6.8 uppers with the 18" SPR profile barrel & is very, very accurate. If I played any long range/precision games, I'd want to make sure I was the sole limiting factor in the rifle's accuracy.

I wasted $400 on a PSA Valkyrie. 3-4" groups at 100.
Found out that the gas block was hitting the handguard. 1/32 clearance at multiple points.
While most people were getting long throts, mine is very short, 80 ELDs hitting the lands at 2.26x, so I can only shoot 75s and can't push them very hard before pressure.
Also, the barrel is A2 profile, you can stick your finger in the flash hider and move the barrel alot, and it heats up quickly.
When my DTech upper arrives, this barrel will go in the trash, and hopefully the receiver is salvageable.

I’ve had some accurate rifles come from psa. But when you look at the price of a lot of their stuff, you can’t get mad at them when a $400 “precision” upper didn’t end up shooting good. Most anyone else’s barrels are going to cost close to what the psa upper costs.

This. My 6.8 upper has the same barrel and is wickedly accurate with the 120gr SSTs. I also had them build me a 20" .224 Vlk upper with the early 1/7 twist. I have not spent much time with it but it shot the AE 75gr TMJ right at 1 MOA when I zeroed it. Hijack aside I don't know much about the PSA uppers other than having read some very mixed reviews.

I have the 16” Recon 6.8, and it shoots great with just about everything. Been planning on trying a Bison 224 V barrel on a future build.

I can't speak for the 224V from PSA, but I have a 223 Wylde upper from them that I have had pretty good luck with. I will call it a 1 moa setup on any given day, with my handloads using Hornady 75 bthp bullets, but it has shot a couple of 0.5moa 5 shot groups before. I've been happy with it.

If I had it to do over again (with what I know now) I would build a rifle using an Aero Precision enhanced upper, and a WOA barrel.
