.

You have my attention, go on..............

Seriously a friend has a pistol version and it's a blast. I've resisted buying one for years but not sure I can hold out much longer.

According to PTR CS, suspect could be a stiff locking lever spring, but I don't think that's the case. They recommend putting a couple hundred rounds through it and seeing if anything changes. I'll try that next week.
Maybe you ought to recommend they finance those couple hundred rounds. :D

Yeah I have one of theses in 7.62 x 39 .
They're accurate enough, I have a little 4 power scope on mine .
The main draw back for me is the weight
You're not gonna want to carry it or it's big brother far. the ak and ar platforms are lighter

I'm going out on a limb here but I wonder if the cocking tube could be welded up wrong in terms of its OAL. The cocking lever cams against the tubular extension on top of the carrier and if the CT is too long you can't get enough leverage to unlock the BCG. If the cocking handle moves (pivots) a lot before contacting the carrier then this might be the case.

I've heard of issues with the incorrect bolt locking lever spring too.

@charliesgrave do you know how to easily identify a gen 1 vs. gen 2? I have a lead on one locally but the seller doesn't have much info.

Great write-up as always, @charliesgrave. And thanks for the barrel close-up. That's dang frustrating about the mags though. This thing looks awesome but the mag deficiency is almost a deal breaker in my book.

Sounds like your ownership of this isn't long for the world?

Thanks for sharing. I have a Century Cetme myself which works well enough and I always thought of PTR as a manufacturer with a great reputation for building some of the nicer HK clones. Very surprised to hear of these issues.

None of my good mags work, but the meme mag locks in like it was made for it.

"Like" doesn't do this thing justice. CFF needs a "love" button.

Very interesting thread. I was considering the pistol version of this gun and ended up getting a KS47.

Just curious is there anything wrong with magpul mags or is it just an annoyance since you have many other styles on hand?

Thanks for clarifying. I like the KS47 as a pistol and would still like a ptr in rifle form. I never cared for this platform in 762x51, but I imagine that recoil impulse is much softer in 762x39.

Is there anything you can do to the magwell? Something subtle maybe a gunsmith could bevel it?

The mags I'm using came with a wasr I bought.
No issues.
Must be the difference in when they where produced.

I believe this was a very common problem that people werent happy about (false advertising). I would ask PTR what exactly they are doing for people having the magazine issues... it seems some folks only are removing a tiny amount of metal inside the magwell like .02 inch and then a lot of their surplus mags are locking in (but with some feeding issues still).

If they could describe the "fix" in detail you could take it to someone with proper equipment and maybe try tiny increments until it worked? Or until your favorite magazines work? Nobody I've found got their whole stash to work... but if you primarily want Hungarian tankers to work maybe the magic number for material removed is low. No way I would give PTR my rifle until 2021-

That being said, most people on the internet are stupid, and plenty of them are simply taking a file to a $1200 rifle, which I could never do. I know I had a shotgun a couple years ago and loading it from the bottom always ended up cutting me, and my gunsmith did a fantastic job beveling the metal in that area. No clue what machine he used but it was the first thing I thought of in this case.

I really liked my 308 PTR... sold it here recently to a fellow member. The only problem was weight! Super interested in this thread because I gave the first generation of these a hard look.
