I’m in the Cary NC area and the nearest public outdoor range to me is 37 PSR in Lillington. is there public land near me where I can shoot my AR-15? TIA

There is the Caswell County Game Land public shooting range up near Yanceyville, NC, but I doubt that's much better for you. Hate to say it but I doubt there's much public land of any sort that isn't a populated park in the Cary/RTP area.
That went to shit. I went there a few years ago when it wasn't awful but it's pointless to go there now

My son went with a friend and they now have a range safety officer and many restrictions. The kind of restrictions you would expect when dealing with a public range. Controlled fire, not from a holster etc and so on.

NCWRC has (or used to have) a range in Ellerbe, but that’s probably around 1.5 hours away from you.

@ZillaG What are you looking to do? Run and gun? Distance? Prone? Transition work? All of those will definitely require a private membership range. I have a membership at Woody's and it is the best deal going from what I can tell. He runs a tight range, but if you don't do stupid things, you will never have an uncomfortable conversation with Damon. Send me a DM if you want to know more.

The wake county firearms education and training center isn't far from there and it's free.

They are strict enough that it's not that much fun but it is a pretty awesome facility. Great place to go if you need to zero something. They have a 100 yard range indoor.

what happened to it? I pass by it all the time heading to my hunting land but never stopped in to shoot there.
It isn't bad. I was there today checking a zero on a rifle and doing some handgun practice. They have 2 range officers there at all times now, you have to watch a 7 minute video to get a range card, sign a waiver on a tablet when you go, and just have controlled fire. There was a third guy there, either training or just new to the rotation in the future, but he was just sweeping up brass. They have target stands and staple guns for everyone to use. I refuse to join any range that requires me to join the NRA and this allows me to do that. My tax dollars are paying for it anyways.

Is there an age requirement? My niece (16) wants to go shooting and i was thinking of taking her there.

I just looked at the rules. 12 and under require 1 on 1 adult supervision, and 13-17 require an adult, but you can have 1 adult for multiple kids in that age range. Make sure everyone has eye and ear protection and closed toe shoes. If you want to have cheap targets they have a printable target on the website as well.

Thanks a bunch ChickenHawk!
You're very welcome. A lot of people dog it, but I am thankful that at least some tax dollars go to services like this. I know some people hate range officers, but it definitely makes my wife more comfortable. I'm sure it does for a lot of people. That makes me happy as it helps the shooting world attract new people. One of the range officers has spotted for me two different times when I was there while it was slow.

I used to go there alot. There was only one guy kind of minding his own business and i liked it alot.

Haven't gone in a while and hearing about these new rules, i wanted to make sure things were ok to take my niece. We gotta keep the young ones interested and learning if we intend to keep this thing alive!

I forgot about this one, thanks. I'll check them out. Yes I just want to zero my optics mainly.

The Range Complex in Autryville NC goes out to 600 yards with steel from 200 to 600, there is also Uhwarrie Flintlock Range.

Oh that's useful, though way incomplete. For example, it doesn't list 37 PSR in Lillington. Thanks!
The NCWRC ranges are free to the public. The interactive map of other ranges has not been updated in years. There are very few options in the Triangle area open to the public and most of those charge exhorbitant fees.

It's worth the trip, open weekends only to the public. Yearly memberships available and not expensive for what Paul offers.
I'm a full member, also 1,000yd range for members only.

This. Best option in the area, if not the nation. I only wish I lived closer.
