At the gun show I saw what looked like a pump-action 223 that fed out of AR style mags. It looked old, and was priced north of $700. Google tells me it's an old Remington.

I have zero interest in a slide action, but for some reason a 223/556 lever gun that fed out of AR mags seems like it would be really cool. Running a lever gun hard is fun, reloading them is not. The whole 30 round AR mag thing solves that issue. Someone really should make one for the anti-2A states, I would buy one "just because".

Only magazine fed lever actions I know of are the Winchester 1895 and Browning BLR

This....

The idea was to give police a .223 patrol rifle in a package that mirrored the 870s they were accustomed to.

But then departments started passing out AR15s and this became an afterthought....

Wouldn't the lever and magazine interfere with each other?

Yea pretty much. If the rounds somehow came out of the mag in reverse you could place it forward of the receiver like where the start of the tube is on a win94. Moving the lever down pushes a round back into the receiver like it was popping out of the tube and onto the carrier and the rest is the same. But since AR mags don't feed backwards then you would have to modify them and now we're not talking "ar mags" anymore.

Or a bullpup, or an offset top loader so you can still use the sights. I mean, if we're going to be impractical, let's get creative.

Right. And they were popular with correctional facilities also for that reason as well the cost. There was a time when AR manufacturers were few and far between and those guns were pricey. So 7615's and Mini 14's were in greater use by law enforcement. Not so much anymore.

I tried a few times to buy a 7615 a couple years ago on Gunbroker. I thought it would be a pretty handy truck / ATV gun. Without ever having one in my hands I figured it would be more accurate than a Ruger and the AR mags would be waaaaaaaaay cheaper. And it wouldn't scare the politicians or cops.

Some guy in the midwest had a bunch of them he had gotten from a prison and was auctioning them one at a time. I kept trying to steal one for $600 but never saw one go for less than $700 and many went over $800.

Yep. There was a time 8 or 10 years or so ago when you could pick these up for about 550 and ARs were pricey. I was considering picking one up myself at that time. Now these are spendy (for what they are) and I can build a decent AR for 550....

No longer makes economical sense....

You are right about that. Right now there are 2 on Gunbroker. One starting at $800 and the other at $950. Plus shipping. Plus transfer fees. I have knock-around Anderson/PSA ARs that don't have more than $500 in them. Crazy.

And the Troy PARs are $700 and up.

Nope, but in some states it may. 10 round mag limit would still apply but you could have a detachable mag at all because it's not semi-auto. I would prefer one of these to the weird top loading AR derived nonsense they're pushing in CA right now... like the bolt action AR. Pump has got to be faster/easier than having to move your hands around to get to the charging handle all the time.

There was (is?) an AK style version that was made for a Russian shooting team. It had the pump action, but also a left side charging handle for when they are shooting from a prone position.

I bet these would be great with subsonic ammo and a suppressor. All the AR widgets, no feed issues.

Agreed. Or I'd move LOL.
