PVS-14 Night Vision Whine

I recently sold my Armasight "Gen 3 Alpha AG/MG" system and upgraded to a used PVS-14 with a gen-3 OMNI VIII Pinnacle tube. I would say, the image is better.

But here's my issue, my old unit barely had any whine to it. My new unit, holy screaming power supply batman, this new unit whines like crazy. My old system used a CR123 battery housing, my new system is a standard dual AA housing.

I did some googling and it just seems like a normal thing. One thing I did find is that voltage matters. So I bought some fresh Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries from Wally World and it made little if any difference.

Do the systems with dual AA housings just whine more than CR123 housings? Or did I just get one that's like that and I'll have to live with it.

My long term plan is to eventually pick up another one, then sell off the bodies and build a Mod-3 Bravo.

My PVS 14 does that LOUDLY when the battery is about to die. Its usually "quiet" when the battery is fresh. This is a timely thread, I just switched mine out last night and experienced the same thing.

Turn it on and "Bweeeeeeeeeee" just penetrates my skull for hours.

ITT tubes whine, and can whine loudly, along with a lot of other no name brand tubes. Commercial tube spec is supposed to be no more -59db (thats from ITT)...mil spec is much, much lower (not releasable)...no noticeable noise.
Early non-autogated tubes have no noise, it is only the autogated tubes that whine.
Like any nvd, 14 quality is all about the tube...L3 tubes are considered the very best and majority of military 14s are L3.

On the civ market, anyone can pick up a mil spec housing and throw any brand of gen 3 tube in it...instant 14...buyer beware.

I have an armasight gen 3 and satisfied with it...if I could find one with an L3 tube, I would get it.

So, going back to this. I have some interesting news.

I got the 14 that started this whole thread with a couple of blem spots on a steep discount. The more I used it, the more I suspected that the blems were not real. So I took it apart and cleaned it up. Sure enough, as I suspected the blems were just specs of dust on the back of the tube screen (this is an OMNI VII tube, pretty nice specs). So now I have a clear clean tube.

But here's the weird part. The horrible whine mostly went away! I can only assume there was a loose connector on the tube or power supply.

Something to think about if anybody ever finds this thread in the future.

Could be some mechanical resonance. The whine might be from a switching power supply in there somewhere?
