So, this rifle started life as a fully factory built PWS Summit T3 and barreled action. I purchased it on a whim when I came across it and I wanted to love it. I put it in a Tac-Sol stock and began shooting it. As of late, I find myself not shooting it as often when plinking or going to gather some squirrels as it’s accuracy is just not there compared this trusty 10/22.

So the question is, do I mess with installing the new barrel on the PWS knowing it could be a pain in the ass as the barrel and action use a shim system to set the head space? Has anyone here played with this before? Would anyone want to help with this project? (To be clear, if you are a gunsmith or have the abilities to handle this, I’m not asking for charity, I’ll gladly compensate you for your time.). I’m just curious if it’s worth the hassle. I really would like a new CV varmit AT one to add to the stable. But I could also see the PWS with a new Magpul stock and a Tac-Sol or volquartsen barrel and maybe it shooting the way I always dreamed it would.
Will one of you more experienced 22 nuts please tell me what to do with my life?
Sincerely,
Destitute in Durham

Any thoughts on asking PWS about it?
Buying used, no telling what the history is.
I like those rifles for a suppressor host.
Locked breech is quiet but let's you stay behind the scope.

BTW, that 10/22 stock is awesome.
I'd love to have a Burgara or Tikka rimfire set in one just like it.

I should have clarified. I did buy it new but it turns out many people hate these PWS tension barrels. I did contact PWS about it last year and they have stopped making this model and wouldn’t even hear about me buying a shim kit from them as they said they no longer stocked parts. Volquartsen bought the design and has been building them, so I’m going to try and contact them about shims this week. And thank you, I love that stock more than any other firearm I own. That may be the one gun I couldn’t ever part with. It took ten years to put together and it shoots amazingly for a factory 10/22 with just a tac sol barrel

I've owned a few tension barrel designs and they all took a bit of tweaking to get consistent accuracy. Have you tried various amounts of tension? Mine were very sensitive to bedding and behaved best when floated.
(Unlike most .920 barrels)
I ended up putting some witness marks on my barrel so I could repeat tension.

This is my first tension barrel and I will be honest that I haven’t even begun to mess with that system as I haven’t fully studied the barrel system to see where to start and I didn’t want to screw anything up.

Volquartsen did buy the design and made a few improvements before selling their version of it. I know for awhile they were offering warranty work on the pws rifles, but I'm not sure if that is still going on.

Give them a call - they will def take care of you, or at least point you in the right direction. Keep in mind that SHOT show is coming up shortly, so must companies will be short staffed at the first of the year.
