So my son is 9 years old (10 in Dec). He has taken a great interest in firearms and quickly becoming a good shot. He takes firearm safety seriously and wants to learn more about guns as well as trying hunting. I haven't hunted since I was in my early teens with my grandfather. So a lot of this stuff is new to me. I have decided that I will take him this year. I have my Hunters Safety course scheduled next week as required to get my hunting license. I read that he won't need one due to being under 16. I does wish to take the safety course and I signed him up with me as I read there is no minimum age limit and I think he will pass the test fine. We found sample questions online and he aced most of them. So my question is about bag and possesion limits. I plan to take him out to get rabbits and squirrels first. If he does will with that, we will try deer next as well as attempt to get a coyote or two. So with him not needing a license, being with me having mine.....will we be limited by my limits? I think I read 5 rabbits per day. So would it be illegal to get 10 since there are two of us? Just using that as an example. I picked up a 207/2018 hunting booklet to read up on seasons and laws.....a bit overwhelming. Never knew there were so many restrictions.

Yes. You are limited to your limit. If he passes hunter safety and you get his license then he gets his own limit.

Best advice. Don’t worry so much about limits. Probably won’t get there anyway. Just go.

Bag and possession limits are on a per license basis. Learn how to care for the game after the kill and then on how to prepare it for consumption. DON'T let it go to waste....

Awesome! You and your son will enjoy this experience, and learning it together will be even better. It sounds like you are already having a good time teaching him to shoot. I'm 60, and I only started hunting about five years ago; I guess it was just a natural progression from guns. I love to sit in a tree and watch the sky turn red and get light, and see and hear the forest wake up. There's nothing like it.

The hunter safety course is about safety, things like projectile accountability, and getting lost in the woods at night. It won't teach you much about hunting. It doesn't even cover most of the stuff that will get you in trouble with the game warden, i.e., limits and seasons. Those are pretty easily found in the regulations digest, available at http://ncwildlife.org, or anywhere they sell licenses. Good luck!

It was a good time teaching my sons to hunt.
If it's convenient, try to have your son join you in the safety class- firearm safety repetition's a good thing.

Re: Big game limits when hunting with a license exempt youth....

Your child can be issued a license exempt harvest report card. You can get this at walmart or anywhere else that sells licenses. This will differentiate your harvests from theirs. It only applies to big game though (deer, turkey, bear....)

Getting everything in place to get my grandson his lifetime license. He will be 1 in Nov. so I have until the day before to get them as an infant license.

Both my girls got a lifetime license before 1 year old. Oldest got it while still a non resident. Same price. I figured even if they are not serious about it, the money goes to the education trust for NCWRC so it's a good cause.

I bought a lifetime license for my daughter shortly after she was born. Now I just need to find somewhere local to hunt.

Bring your kid hunting and let him/her have the BB gun but WITHOUT the damned BB's!! Sitting on a field yesterday morning and kid about 45/50 yards away kept shooting the BB gun into the air at everything that he saw fly. Being we're hunting doves I'm looking up when one hits my glasses!! Thank God I had on my glasses since it was just after daylight and before sun up.
LEAVE THE DAMNED BB'S AT HOME!!

IMHO the best thing you could do is take him squirrel hunting. It is a great way to learn hunting skills while providing a good bit of action. Deer hunting with a kid is easier than you might expect btw. I would hold off on rabbit hunting unless you have access to a pack of dogs. Trying to jump a rabbit without dogs in briar patches/cutovers etc is tough on a good day and the walking can be rough for a grown man much less a kid. PM me if you would like some pointers on setting up kid friendly deer stands/blinds.

I bought my son a lifetime license, and I looked him up the system- but not sure how to get a game harvest card for him? I can order them for myself online, but he doesn't have an option for it.

I think you can just ask for them anywhere that sells licenses. No charge

If he does not have hunter safety you might not be able to do it online. Call NCWRC and ask. They have been great any time I called or emailed them. And the above is correct, anybody that sells the license will print big game tags for you.

If you have time take him out to study animal behavior in the woods before the season opens...the animals don’t make it easy once season opens.

If you get 5 rabbits you need to move fast, you’re in somebody’s back yard.
