It does rain in the desert. This is one of the few times I used a 240B instead .50 cal. We are staging vehicles getting ready to leave the IZ heading out Assassin’s Gate up to Haifa St

Drill Sergeant School graduation day (I was class Honor Grad) summer of 2010 (photo had wife in it, requested I take it down)

You had camouflage uniforms back then?
Those are ERDLs...I had sets issued in early 80s at Bragg, they were authorized for wear until 1990, same year they outlawed our OG107s. The ERDLs had slant pockets like the OGs...there was something similar with straight pockets but I can’t remember what they were called

I ask because my father was in Vietnam, and up until the 80’s they had flat olive drab uniforms...
I was about 4, so 1980’ish when they switched to bdu’s

If you look at the other photo taken in 67 I had on the flat green jungle utilities. For my second tour in 69 they were finally issuing the camo to Marines. I also had some Korean tiger stripes in 67, but they got confiscated at "customs" when I got ready to leave Vietnam. I hope that Corporal that took them has enjoyed them.

Good on you all fellas. From Chads Uber sexy pic, to 11bs amazing wife pic, to the vintage Vietnam pics. I thank you.

See, I used to feel somewhat lesser of a man because I never served. Never put on a uniform or took an all expense paid trip to a foreign land filled with people who wanted to kill me. But then, I realized, I have a pretty darn important job to do myself. And that is to be the kind of American that is worth going into combat to defend. I have my family, my job, my faith, my beliefs, and my rights. And I try, as often as I can, to be the kind of American that all y’all went to these places and did all this stuff for.

There are so many people here stateside that aren’t worth the dust on yalls boots. Aren’t worth the first trigger pull. And totally aren’t worth the erector set looking gear some here on this page have installed in their backs just to keep them mobile.

So when y’all we’re humping about the world, doing all of this epic stuff. Giving time, blood, sweat, and effort. All folks like me can do is say “hey troop, I’m worthy of the effort, or at least doing my best to be. And I thank I you for it.”

This is about the best I have ever seen to sum up my feelings also.

Thank you all who posted in this thread and all who have served to allow me to be the American that I am! My family and I are truly grateful!

The picture of my dad way back in post number one was in ERDLs. One of my biggest regrets as a child was seeing those things getting tossed out or lost or given away. I would love to have a set.

@Combat Diver , when you are with tents and Germany did you doing cross training with Det A Berlin? We did some winter training and mountain climbing with them.

No as they shut Det A down in 89'-90' when I was in Tolz. Had one of them get assigned to my dive team then.

Taken inside a C130 the other night. Been flying in these things since I was a freshman in High School AFJROTC in 79'. Have taken off in about another 100 flights but never landed in them.

I got 56, in the 10 years I was on status, before my left ankle took me off jump status permanently (while running PT, at that).

Spent a more than a few evenings at the Garden of Eden, from '04 to '07. Never got used to jumping into Malmsheim. I never landed in the Kampfschwimmer Kommando Kaserne, or on the Benz test track, but it was close a couple of time. lol!

Found what old pics I had & scanned some in. Nothing sexy work-wise, mostly just goofin' around.

My first re-enlistment, in '90. I was a 2-yr baby, & re-upped at 18 mos. TIS.

Goofin' off in the motor pool, before heading out to an FTX & live-fire (4.2" mortar). Ft Sill, OK, summer '90.

42 for me. I was on status for 42 months.

"Jesus Carl, get your finger off the trigger!" YOU are THE CARL all the memes are made from! who knew!?!

January '97. Ft Irwin, CA, aka NTC. All our names were painted on that rock after this pic was taken, so my name is now painted on a national monument. Turns out we were training with 2nd ACR to support in Bosnia later that year.

July '98, on the side of some mountain in Bosnia.

Scan6.jpg

Late summer, '02 or '03, on a JCET with a Bundeswehr OpInfo Bn. Some village near-ish Mayen, Germany.

Sadly, I really don't have many more than these. I'm horrible on both sides of the camera & tend to avoid them.

Did you ever train a place called 'Bonnland'?

Not that I recall. OPFOR at NTC was my first duty station & I've been to Pineland/Mackall/Hoffman many, many times & Grafenwoehr, of course. On that German JCET, we went out to an old East German base near the Polish border. Never got into town the week we were there, but the Germans brought so much beer, liquor & grub, it didn't matter.

Bonnland was in Germany. It was a real town that had been 'appropriated' by the German government specifically for MOUT training.
It was a cool place.
You can get results on Google when searching for bonnland.

They had their 'profile' troops man the kantina from 1st call till the Sergeant Major stumbled his drunk ass off to rack out. We were a 'cherry picked team, all of us fluent German speakers & they kept us drunk from dinner chow till the wee hours every night. Good times.

Got invited down to Romania to validate a couple of teams they were training up to support us in the 'Stan. They are serious about their hospitality & drinking started at lunch. Lol! They treated us like rock stars & were super people.

Gotcha. I was a mech grunt before I went to Germany in '91 as a freshly re-classed Meddac puke, so only visited Graf for PLDC. Next go 'round in Germany in '04, I worked in the SOCEUR J3 & only saw Graf on the odd QRF-type exercise, to deploy a command & control element on very short notice.
