Had a surprisingly nice experience at the Lillington driver license office this morning, yes I know unbeliveable. My driver license was getting in really crappy condition so instead of getting just a duplicate online I made an appointment to get my Real ID instead, same cost. Appointment was for 9:30 and was called in at 9:35, with about 10 people in the lobby waiting their turn as walkins, walked out at 9:50. I will advise everyone to make sure you have the proper paperwork to make it go smoother. All the info is on the NC DMV website.

The information on the website is close but not accurate as listed. If your license runs out like mine due to not having a unlamented social security card it gets bad. Expired license will not allow you to get a SS card and the dilemma gets worse. I had some nice people when face to face but there was some dumb government workers with zero knowledge with such simple jobs. Walmart is not the only place with low IQ workers.

I had to get my name updated on my SS card, had Jim instead of James, also needed certified birth certificate from NY State.
Got the SS card updated in about half an hour and the certificates for my wife and I in about a week from a NYS contractor.
Have not upgraded the DL yet, I fly once in a while so I'll need it.

Wife and I are getting ours in September with an appointment, since both our passports are long expired. I was going to not get one, but I’ve got aging siblings with aging spouses up and down the east coast. I figure in a few years if I don’t kick off first I’ll have to start making appearances at funerals.

Just a tip: if one does make an appointment for self + spouse, be certain to make separate/two appointments. Naively, I thought that the State, being, you know, involved in the whole marriage thing (two becoming one flesh) and all, would get the "I thought I was making an appointment for us." Clerk was pretty much no-nonsense about singular means singular; plural means plural (not that they put it in quite so grammatical terms). :(

Anyway, just a heads up public service message.

Yep, when I called and said me and the missus were coming they scheduled one at 10 and the other at 10:30.

I just got a license, so I didnt want to go back through and pay again for Real ID
But will have to sooner than later, typically fly once a year

Thanks for the added info.

Wife and I got ours together about a month ago. Made two separate appointments for the same time. Appointments were for about two weeks after the phone call. When we showed up, they called me first and her about one minute later. We went to two separate agents and were out in 15 minutes. This in North Raleigh! She got an eye exam and I didn't.

I do contract work at a few US government sites and nuclear sites. Also fly from time to time. I got mine to make my life easier. Was fairly painless. Had all paperwork, plus extra that I didn't need. In and out in less than 40 mins.

I got mine when I became a NC resident. It was just as easy as getting a regular lic. I fly 4-6 times a year so it was that use the passport everytime.

AND you openly Admit to that...…………………...unbelievable.....
It is obvious that I'm not from these parts! ;)
I did know that the HQ for Hardee's was in Rocky Mount before I ever set foot in NC in 1990.

I have a passport and a Global Entry card, any reason to mess with the real ID thing before I next have to renew my DL?

Yes, unless you come from south of the border.

And I'm not talking about Dillon, SC.

No. You can use your passport to fly. That’s what I do. I renewed my DL online and will get the real id next time around and hopefully it won’t be as crowded then since most people will have already gotten them.

Well, guess I’ve lived under a rock all this time. I didn’t know you needed the Real ID for domestic flights. When did that change?

When the transformation into the Eastern Bloc circa 1955 was complete.

Look up who can check what in the REAL ID database. Pretty much anyone from a security guard at a rock concert to possibly Canadian RCMP mounties.

I flew for years with a regular NC driver's license. Guess I should ask when it changed that a regular NC driver's license wasn't a Real ID?

last year when the Feds tightened up the noose. You can still use a passport and in fact, I have a passport CARD that works for crossing contiguous borders so I wasn't gonna join yet another Federal BS ID program when the borders are as
porous as a screen door.

No. You can use your passport to board any domestic fight.

That's what I do - I use my passport. Next time DL comes up for renewal is 2025; I guess I'll get it then. I heard about it just a week or two before I had to renew last time...and there were NO appointments available, so I went early to a DMV office in Cary, and the line of "southerners" was around the effing building. Pissed on that - I had to go to WORK and couldn't afford the damn wait.

My wife signed me and my kids up for that passport card when we renewed our passports.
I also don't plan on getting this real ID thing till the next renewal.

Is that Global Entry card similar to TSA Pre-check, but for international flights?

Just dealt with this yesterday. My youngest was getting her permit and had enough info so she went straight to real ID. Oldest got her license a couple weeks before they could do it or something so she has to go back. We figure the direction they are headed they will be doing some flying.

That got us looking. My wife BC, well, it's not a BC. It's a church document and not a state one. And her mom does not know if they even have one or where it is if they do. Checked mine and it's a photocopy. How did we get this far in life? lol

Why would you get a REAL ID if a passport works? WHy not just get the passport? makes more sense than giving them yet another way to find you.

A passport is really expensive and a damn paper chase if you are not going OUTCONUS. The REAL ID is a lot cheaper in a lot faster to get.

Since I have a passport I can wait until NY next renewal for DL.
On the plus side, illegal aliens cannot get a DL in NCunless they stress also committing federal identity fraud.
The DMV checks names again SS records. If they do not match they get rejected.

For anyone of Latin American origin, and your BC has both your parents paternal last names on it, but you have only used your first last name, make sure you get your name legally changed and update your SS records to reflect this.
Otherwise you will have to start using both last names on all legal documents including DL and passport.
My wife found this out.

Dumb question, after October 2020 are all NC DL’s going to be issued (new or renewal) as Real ID’s? I know you are not required to now but with it being driven by the federal Real ID Act back in 2005 (yes, this thing started 15 years ago) will the states just move on to require the same stuff then just in case like the 55mph speed limit and seat belt law the Feds decide to penalize non-conformity?

I believe that is the case, but I don't know for sure.

I got my first passport around 1991 or 1992; I have had to go outside the US several times. Got that at the PO, and it was muy streamlined compared to the DMV plus the requirements. Plus, I use it as one of my docs for CMP orders for M1 Garands :D

Also I am not a fan of bringing my passport everywhere I go domestically. It is much harder to replace if lost, stolen etc... For me it was no different to get a REAL ID vs a standard drivers lic so I did it. I had one in VA so I am already in the database. I also use the TSA pre-check so I am on that list as well. I travel enough by airplane that not having a REAL ID is hassle.

What's wrong with laminated? Who expects a paper card to last very long unlaminated?
