I have always used a front bag when I was shooting a rifle off the bench. Today, I was at the range (shooting 6.5 CM) and started at the 500 yard steel. No problems hitting the steel (24" circles). Tired the 8" squares and hit about 60% of the time. A guy that was spotting for me said that I need to try shooting using a rear bag which I had but never used. After a couple shots using the rear bag, I was grouping on the bigger steel around .75 MOA. Ran out of rounds before I could get back to the 8" steel.
Those rear bags work.

Jeff, I think it is a Champion. I am looking for another one that is not as stiff where the butt of the rifle can settle in a little easier.

Yup, a good rear bag is invaluable. If you're mostly shooting from a bench, it doesn't need to be fancy. If you get into positional shooting, you'll want something more adaptable.

People have different likes but I love my Crosstac rear squeeze bag! I don’t know what material they use but i swear it only stretches vertical and the rubberish type surface does not slip and is tough.

Plus 1 for the Crosstac! I started out making my own out different materials from socks to cut up blue jeans filled with everything from rice, sand, and plastic BBs. But those Crosstac bags are awesome!

NCFubar, thanks.

When I Google it I came up with those 2 venders. Was looking for someone that might have free shipping.

I'll have to dig out what I bought. Nothing facy but it was from Core Solutions. A cool old timer spent some time with me at the club and gave me some good pointers with position and the rear bag. Definitely helped. I need to find more old, wise friends and associates. Cause if I don't hurry and learn more stuff I'll be no use to the young guys in 20 years. :(

CZ, some of the advice that the guy gave me was you should not be in any hurry to take the shot and do not release the trigger until you see the bullet hit the steel. It works.

Today when I was coming back from the range I stopped by CH Precision Rifle to see about a match they are having next month. While there, I got talked into a set of bags that they had made for them. They are Wiebad bags. I think the bigger one is different for what you can buy. Buck said that he had them put the straps on the bigger bag where you can slip your rifle under them and tighten them down. One of the straps will fit over the scope if you want to. He claims when moving from station to station he helps because the bags are strapped to the gun.....Who knows...not me.
