Building a 22 upper for the SBR and of course it needs to be quiet.

I have looked at the Spectre 2 and Gemtech 22, and have heard about the Dead Air Mask.

What are some good ones that I may have overlooked? I just started looking yesterday but I know there are good ones and not so good ones.

CMMG 4.5 barrel and bolt, under a 7" handguard.

Thunder Beast 22 Take Down ... is my favorite. I also have a Silencer Co Sparrow which works quite nicely I just like the disassembly of the Thunder Beast better ... it seems easier to breakdown the baffles for cleaning than the mono-core of the Sparrow.

I've been very very happy with the specter 2

Any of the big names and I'm sure you'll be happy. Just choose one that has the features you want/need. Personally I went with the mask. I particularly liked the way the baffles key together thinking it should help keep POI shift repeatable being that one of my hosts is a precision rifle. I also thought it was more visually appealing than the spectre II I was also considering.

I've owned an AAC Element 2 for a few years and it is pretty quiet. If I were to pick up another it would be a Mask.

I'll second contacting Scott at Tarheelstatefirearms.

It looks like the Spectre 2, the Thunder Beast, and the Mask are at the top (in no order) as it is now. Price is all about the same, within $100 of each other from what I've seen, and have read nothing but good things about all 3.

I haven't looked at the Elements yet though.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to go wrong on a 22 can from the top brands.

Rugged Oculus
Dead Air Mask
TBAC 22TD
SiCo Spectre
AAC Halcyon
AAC Element 2
Q El Camino
Q Erector
Energetic NYX
KG Made Swarm
Griffin Optimus Micro
Surefire Ryder

Unlike pistol cans you're not worried about interchangeable pistons/3-lugs, and unlike rifle cans you're not worried about mounting system. Rimfire cans are basically 1/2-28 direct thread and be done with it.

I personally wouldn't recommend a Sparrow. It's the one can I own that I regret buying.

Why on the sparrow? I've heard they have a bad FRP but I shot a buddies and I didn't notice anything crazy.

I really don't like the disassembly/reassembly process. It has one advantage over some cans, in that guy can tuck it inside a rail and not leave the end on the barrel due to the tube unscrewing. Other than that, it does nothing that a lot of the options do better...and the Sparrow was more expensive than most of the others at the time.

I'd buy a dozen more Spectres before I even considered another Sparrow. (With the exception of I'd buy a White Sparrow just for the looks based on a particular host).

Gotcha, I didn't disassemble my buddies so I have no clue how it comes apart, just know that's it's a mono-core.

SS Sparrow and Gen 1 Element here, love the Sparrow, it ruled the .22 can market for many years. The element is a PITA to clean, was my first and last aac product.

If I were to buy a new one, TBAC.

Have the Sparrow from Scott at Tarheel State Firearms. https://www.tarheelstatefirearms.com/
I think my next can will come from Scott, he is held in such high regard that I would be foolish to not give him a call. And if I remember correctly he does engraving, which would be great for my SBR lower, eventually lol.

Digging through the list and seeing a few others. I have seen a few GemTech Outback 2 and came across the Thompson Machine line, but I dont know much of anything about them.

I’m not that far from Morrisville; you’re welcome to stop by and shoot my TBAC .22 takedown. It’s a great can.

The big issue in your application will be how it takes down. This is due to the "under handguard" application.
It really sucks to leave parts of the can under the handguard when you unscrew it.

Look at designs that don't loosen up (o-ring, 3 lug etc) or designs that the mount is fixed to the core so you can crank it down without the mount sticking/unthreading.

Due to the rapid fire friendliness of your chosen platform, keeping the can secure on the threads is important.
Checking a hot suppressor for looseness every mag is the suck.

You're right, something that I didn't think about at all. I was thinking I could pull the HG off for cleaning it and all, but hot cans and grabbing for tightness does not give me warm and fuzzies.

The can in jail for my 308 is on a FH with a lock ring (SpecWar 762) and I wasn't too concerned about that one, but there will also be no tuck, 15" HG and 18" barrel. That was what was on my mind, but I know there are other options.

I will have to look at mounting options before I throw down, as that is hugely important to the design here.

My good friend has an AAC Halcyon and is very disappointed with it.

Too much tolerance stacking and wobble. Baffle strike seems more like a a when, not an if, and it’s also noticeably louder than a few other popular .22 cans

I would go with a baffle stack design over a monocore and select something that could handle more than .22 LR.

The Rugged Suppressors Oculus has these features and also can be used in short or long configuration.

Whatever happened with Ruger’s Silent-SR? I seldom read about them.

I run my mask under a rail and haven't had any issues yet. I just tighten the bottom piece of the can way tighter than I tighten it to the barrel and it hasn't unscrewed from the can yet.

Griffin Armament Optimus Micro can handle 5.56 on a 12.5” barrel. It’s considered heavy for a .22 can, but it’s less than 2oz heavier than a Spectre 2 in direct thread configuration and it’s rated for .22-250, 224 Valkyrie, 22 Nosler etc

I use one on a 16” AR but also shoot it on my .22 bolt gun. I have used it on my 1911.-22 but my IA can lives there so I don’t do it regularly

Dang this can looks impressive. And decent price too.

I absolutely love mine

I can’t tell a difference in it and my Recce 5 out in the open

It does have more FRP than a full size 5.56 can but after two rounds, they’re close enough my ear can’t distinghish them

How would you feel about it for a dedicated 556 can?
