I keep having a dream every time I sleep, where I'm working to some capacity, usually in an office. Even though I have IU, 100% P&T SCD, SSDI, a service dog, and a power wheelchair, it would be 99% impossible for me to get a job. I've tried plenty of times before it was hard for me to walk to get one and no one would hire me because I have BoBo, they never said it but I know that's what the reason was I'm not an idiot. My wife said she thinks I'm having the dreams because I'm bored. I put this in Veterans Corner because I figured a lot more veterans could relate. Move if needed.

Are there any volunteering opportunities in your area that you might would enjoy doing?

Haven't really looked into it much, my wife works part time and the truck has the wheelchair lift on it that carries around my wheels. I would love to work and make good money but I'd lose a lot of benefits if I did.

That's why I was curious about volunteer opportunities..... Maybe something you could do a couple days a month. You wouldn't get paid but might still find it rewarding.

Right, and I'd have to figure out when to do things around when my wife works which is in the middle of the day (of course) which kind of ruins a lot of times of things to do

The sad part about volunteering is it could be construed as being able to work and he could loose benefits as well

That too, and social security is clammering to take my benefits away. It took my forever to get them, they'll yank them in a second if they could.

They took mine for a year. Had several hearings and they only had 1/10 of my medical records. The last hearing I took them 256 pages from just 3 months of test and treatment.

Got a letter back from them saying hhmmm You are still disabled. We'll get you check back to you come August. And oh by the way. We wont be paying you for that year.

I think I have an idea of where your recurring dream is coming from...

When I was on active duty, I used to have a recurring dream that I was going to have to go through boot camp again; like boot camp was a yearly refresher course that had to be redone every year to maintain a certification.

Then, after leaving active duty, I went to college full time. The whole time I was a college student, I kept having a recurring nightmare that I would have to go back for "one last tour in Iraq". I had gone to Iraq twice in real life...

Then, I graduated college and started working in my current career. I kept having a recurring dream that I had missed a final exam or even a whole class and that my college degree was being withheld from me until I fulfilled this nightmare deficit.

So, in every stage of my life, I've had nightmares about the previous stage of life and needing to "redo" something.

I've told my wife about my reoccurring dreams over the last 12 years.

I once asked her, "I wonder if retired people have nightmares about having to go back to work....."

Your post has now answered my question...

This answers a lot of questions I have about it, because I've had those dreams about going back to the desert, still do sometimes. But now it's mostly about going back to work even though I know I can't. Thank you for this perspective.

You should look into working from home. There are lots of jobs like debt collection that are going to home based telephone work.

I'm basically medically retired. It just sucks because I'm only 31 and have so many health problems.

I bet you could find something part time or even volunteer from home helping a hot line. Trust me 31 and going through what you've done you could be a valuable part of a team.

@Newboy craps on a thread and lands on anotther ignore list. Buh bye.

Doesn't have any skills, but won't go out and learn any.

Could get a job, but doesn't want to lose his handouts.

Does like sitting around feeling sorry for himself.

Apparently you aren’t familiar with the VA programs he’s on.

He would be subject to criminal and civil prosecution by the VA/Federal Gov if he got a job working for money.

IU isn’t a handout.

You can work a paying job while on IU. I have a part-time gig at a pawn/gun shop. As long as your income is less than the poverty guideline. So about 12k per year.

IU means you're unable to sustain a full-time job, gainful employment.

The other poster implied he would lose his “handouts” so I was assuming it would be full time but yes you are right

Your real issue is that leash. Employers know at first glance that people are going to have to pet BoBo. They just won’t take the risk!

I’m kidding of course.

I wonder of you could volunteer at the children’s hospital, take BoBo around to cheer up some kids.

BTW, I employ a number of veterans, generally great employees, but I just don’t have a way to offer a work from home position.

Can you go to school? Not even necessarily to get “job skills” but as a way to occupy the mind? Go the the local CC and learn
Programming, basket weaving, post modern feminist haiku....
