Red Oak Beer

Red Oak and Hummingbird Helles are readily available in Lowe’s. Wife is a fan of Hummingbird, agree it’s better in the bottle though.

Red Oak has been my go to when available on tap. Redbird is good to. This past Christmas I went with some family to the beer tasting/sampling they have. Go with a driver though. Several different samples to try. There was seasonal offerings as well.

I like Red Oak. It does t taste like it used to, though, bsck when I moved here In the early 00’s. It used to have a more sour flavor, but I like that it’s still un-pasteurized.

Made a trip up to do the brewery tour and eat dinner last weekend. The place is impressive inside the taproom. It was raining like hell so the outside wasn’t happening. But the tour was good. $25 per person does the regular process tour that you’ve seen at 100 other breweries. But then you finish the tour with sampling five beer flavors and a free pint glass to take home.

My favorite was the black oak stout. They had the 1516 beer that’s pretty smooth. High alcohol content so you gotta be careful. The hummingbird helles was pretty good too.

The food wasn’t the best German stuff I’ve ever had but it was ok. Not crazy overpriced. The gift shop wasn’t too expensive dive but it wasn’t a bargain, either.

Definitely check it out if you’ve not been. They put some serious funds into building the taproom. It gives an old German medieval castle feel.

Stopped by Steve’s Smokehouse in Graham the next day for brunch. Damn good food there! I had brisket in a biscuit with fried eggs on top. Yessir!!!

I gotta get to Steve's. I hear nothing but good things about them.

I bought a Red Oak labeled oversized glass from them way back from them when it was Spring Garden in Greensboro. That was maybe 25 years ago.

The deal was you paid more the one time for the glass and they would fill it up for the same price as a regular pint. It's about a 1/3 larger.

They still honor the deal when I bring it in to the new brewery.

All the craft brewers in NC owe Bill Sherrill a handshake because without him they might still be required to ship via Anheuser-Busch. He spearheaded the law change allowing for self distribution.

You mentioned German food. Where does that come from? I looked at the Red Oak site and they didn't say anything about a restaurant, just food trucks.

They’ve got a little kitchen. It’s immediately adjacent to the beer hall so the inside of the hall can be “dog friendly.” They’ve got wurst, pretzels, sauerkraut, and sausage. It was reasonable, but like I said, not anything to write home about.

They do have a food truck area but no one was using it because of the rain.

Drove past the brewery on 85 many times. We stopped once looking for a bathroom and the brewery tap room/beer garden is really nice. Much nicer than it looks from the highway. I like ales more than german beers but they were not bad. Only food was from a truck and not always there. Has a lot of potential for events.
