Ok bear with me. This may be a slightly long post.

Reloading for 6.5CM and read all these wonderful things about RL16 from Alliant. Picked up a few pounds a few months back as H4350 is still a little hit or miss.

I’ve had some Hornady brass resized and ready to load for a while and just got around to trying to load some last night. I use a Forster press, Forster dies, Hornady powder measure, and Ohaus scale to trickle.

So I tossed some RL16 in the Hornady powder measure and go to throw my first charge. CRUNCH which isn’t uncommon as I run into that with a lot of extruded powders. I’m still setting the powder throw with the micrometer and CRUNCH every single time I throw a charge. I weigh it, toss it back in the hopper, make an adjustment, and finally get close to the initial charge I want to start with.

So I throw another charge. Hmmm, only 23 grains when I should be throwing around 41.7. Dump the powder, throw another charge, and the damn case is EMPTY. Throw another charge...EMPTY. WTAF is going on you ask, and I’ll tell you. The measure is clogged to the point it won’t throw any powder. I tap the funnel on the bottom with an empty case and here she comes, dumping out a pile on my bench. This happened about 6 or 7 times before I could get 30 cases charged.

And all this to find out my Forster resizing die is opening the case mouth to the point that a 143 ELD-X will just slide right in. But that’s a different story altogether.

So is anyone reloading with RL16 and how’s it metering for you? I’ve never seen this with any other powder.
